{"id":5548,"date":"2011-06-25T01:32:01","date_gmt":"2011-06-25T05:32:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=5548"},"modified":"2021-03-19T21:16:04","modified_gmt":"2021-03-20T01:16:04","slug":"heroes-con-report-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=5548","title":{"rendered":"Heroes Con Report &#8211; Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z052611heroescon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Saturday<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Saturday<\/strong> is usually the busiest day at most shows and this was going to be no exception.\u00a0 My goal was to get all of my sketches by the end of the day so that<strong> Doralya<\/strong> and I could head back home [a 7 &#8211; 8 hour drive] at a decent time on <strong>Sunday<\/strong>.\u00a0 So I spent the morning setting up sketches with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Billy Fowler<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Rob Holstein<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Chris Schweizer<\/strong><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Evan Bryce<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 That freed me up to circulate the con floor and con art auction area.\u00a0 So here are some con photos and comments&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011_ah.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the great things about <strong>Heroes Con<\/strong> is that on <strong>Saturday<\/strong> night there is always an <strong>art auction<\/strong>.\u00a0 During the day it&#8217;s not uncommon to see artists in a special area working on the pieces that they&#8217;ll donate to the show.\u00a0 Above is <strong>Adam Hughes<\/strong> just starting on his painting which went for an<em> all-time<\/em><strong> Heroes Con<\/strong> record of <strong>12 grand<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011bfowler.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sweatybuffalo.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Billy Fowler<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and his lady. Last year I met <strong>Billy<\/strong> and got his really cool take on <a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=5486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Sly as Jack Carter<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 I wanted to get another piece from <strong>Billy <\/strong>and he agreed and gave me his on-point take of<strong> Sly <\/strong>as <strong>Rocky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although I&#8217;d never met<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> Chris Schweizer,<\/strong><\/span> I&#8217;d discovered his art through a link for <strong>Heroes Co<\/strong>n.\u00a0 I really liked his style and was delighted to discover that <strong>Chris<\/strong> was a very approachable and enthusiastic artist.\u00a0 He really took his time interacting with folks who stopped by his table.\u00a0 I picked up his art book and he threw in his take on <strong>Sly<\/strong> as <strong>Freddy<\/strong> from <em><strong>&#8220;Cop Land.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011robinh.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"561\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Robin Holstein<\/strong> was another artist that I discovered from a link for <strong>Heroes Con<\/strong>.\u00a0 I really liked Robin&#8217;s pen and ink work.\u00a0 He agreed to do a sketch of <strong>Sly<\/strong> as <strong>Rambo<\/strong>.\u00a0 When I saw the results, I immediately asked if he had room on his sketchlist to do another <strong>Stallone<\/strong>.\u00a0 He did and did an equally cool riff on <strong>Sly<\/strong> as<strong> Jack Carter<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>LittleJohn<\/strong> saw what <strong>Robin<\/strong> had done for me and immediately signed up to get <strong>Robin&#8217;s take<\/strong> on <strong>Little John<\/strong> from <strong>Robin Hood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011tt.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>LittleJohn, Patricia<\/strong> and I ended up at the <strong>Inkwell Awards Panel<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Dan Panosian<\/strong> kicked off the panel and then <strong>Tim Townsend<\/strong> [pictured above] served as the host.\u00a0 It was cool seeing <strong>Kevin Nolan<\/strong> there and getting some well-deserved recognition.\u00a0 It was also a kick to see that my best friend, <strong>John Beatty<\/strong>, was nominated for an award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011bh_ar.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"587\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That&#8217;s a shot of <strong>David Williams<\/strong> aka <em><strong>Brohawk<\/strong><\/em> working on his <strong>Spider-Man<\/strong> painting which ended up being won by <a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011ah_drink.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Adam Hughes at the auction<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Andrew Robinson<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011ar_barb1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>working on his barbarian painting<\/strong><\/span><\/a> which turned out to be my favorite piece in the auction.\u00a0 <strong>Brian Stelfreeze<\/strong> did a really sweet painting of <a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011brians.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Scooby-Doo and Daphne<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to support the show.\u00a0 <strong>Eric Canate<\/strong> worked up this <a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011ec_avengers.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>really cool Avengers piece<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011philn.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Phil Noto checked in<\/strong><\/span><\/a> with his take on <strong>Supergirl<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Tommy Lee Edwards<\/strong> turned his brush towards <a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011tljones.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>the Rocketeer<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Not all pieces that make it into the auction are paintings.\u00a0 Some very cool <a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011famous_monsters.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>pen and ink<\/strong><\/span><\/a> art also made the cut.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z062011ar_barb.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"679\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Doralya<\/strong> and I joined <strong>LittleJohn312<\/strong> and <strong>Patricia<\/strong> at the auction.\u00a0 I brought <strong>Rico<\/strong> his <em>bigger-than-life-size<\/em> <strong>Mr. T <\/strong>and <strong>Rocky Balboa<\/strong> standees.<strong> Rico<\/strong> seemed truly happy to get them.\u00a0 This year the auction moved at a much quicker pace, but after a few hours, <strong>Doralya<\/strong> and I were beat and knew we had a long drive waiting for us in the morning.\u00a0 We said our good-byes and headed to the <strong>Westin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was one of the best<strong> Heroes Cons <\/strong>ever.\u00a0 I know I say that every year, but it&#8217;s true.\u00a0 <strong>Doralya<\/strong> had a blast enjoying the city while I was at the con and then meeting up with <strong>LittleJohn<\/strong>, his wife and others for meals and special events.\u00a0 <strong>Doralya <\/strong>is already making plans to go next year.\u00a0 Truth be told, so am I.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday Saturday is usually the busiest day at
