{"id":5676,"date":"2011-08-09T01:44:41","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T05:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=5676"},"modified":"2018-02-24T18:15:59","modified_gmt":"2018-02-24T22:15:59","slug":"5-unfairly-derided-action-sci-fi-flicks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=5676","title":{"rendered":"5 Unfairly Derided Action Sci-Fi Flicks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2011\/z080911riddick.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"713\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recently <strong>Ryan Britt<\/strong> at <strong>TOR.com<\/strong> took a look at <del><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>5 Unfairly Derided Action Sci-Fi Flicks<\/strong><\/span>.<\/del> \u00a0 Here they are with a bit of what <strong>Britt<\/strong> had to say and, for what they&#8217;re worth, my thoughts on each.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Island<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Britt:<\/strong> Seemingly a rip-off of <strong><em>Logan\u2019s Run<\/em><\/strong> and<strong> <em>The Running Man<\/em><\/strong>, the movie tells the story of a couple of runaway clones who are searching for their counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zablo<\/strong>:\u00a0 I saw <em><strong>The Island <\/strong><\/em>and it was okay.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember too much about <em><strong>The Island <\/strong><\/em>, which probably gives you an indication of how good it really was.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Chronicles of Riddick<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Britt:<\/strong> I think most fans would agree <strong><em>Pitch Black<\/em><\/strong> is a pretty solid sci-fi thriller, but most of us don\u2019t really know what to make of <strong><em>Riddick<\/em><\/strong>. Does this character even belong in a movie like this? In the first film, it was all sneaking around in the dark dealing with scary stuff, and then the next movie was this big <strong><em>Dune<\/em><\/strong> meets <strong><em>Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/strong> visual epic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Zablo: Britt <\/strong>is exactly right.\u00a0 <em><strong>Chronicles<\/strong><\/em> was 180 degrees away from<em><strong> Pitch Black<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Fans weren&#8217;t expecting the dramatic change and <em><strong>Chronicles<\/strong><\/em> threw them.\u00a0 Over the years my fondness of <strong>Chronicles<\/strong> has grown.\u00a0 I like it more with each new viewing.\u00a0 [But I am glad that the third<strong> Riddick<\/strong> movie is going to be more like<em><strong> Pitch Black<\/strong><\/em> than <em><strong>Chronicles<\/strong><\/em>.]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Britt:<\/strong> Though <strong>Lucas<\/strong> and <strong>Spielberg<\/strong> talk a mean game about how <em><strong>Star Wars<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Indiana Jones<\/strong><\/em> pay homage to <strong>Flash Gordon-style<\/strong> serials of a bygone era, <strong>Kerry Conran <\/strong>actually did it for real. <strong><em>Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow<\/em><\/strong> shouldn\u2019t be viewed as a contemporary action film, but instead as a kind of alternate universe where these sorts of movies never stopped getting made.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Zablo: <\/strong>I saw <em><strong>Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow<\/strong><\/em> on the big screen.\u00a0 I really dug it.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t think it was the greatest thing ever, but it was fun.\u00a0 It was good enough to earn a spot in my movie library.\u00a0 After reading<strong> Britt&#8217;s<\/strong> take on the film, I think it&#8217;s time to pull <em><strong>Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow <\/strong><\/em> down for a viewing!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Equilibrium<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Britt: <\/strong>The movie also seems pretty low budget which, unlike the <em><strong><em>Matrix<\/em><\/strong><\/em>, means its not trying to impress you. With <strong>Christian Bale, Emily Watson, Sean Bean<\/strong>, and yes, <strong>Taye Diggs<\/strong>, you\u2019ve got an action movie cast at least as good as the far inferior <em><strong><em>Terminator: Salvation<\/em><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Zablo: <\/strong>I disagree with<strong> Britt<\/strong>.\u00a0 I think that<strong> Kurt Wimmer<\/strong> was trying to impress us and for most of us, he succeeded.\u00a0 (And I&#8217;d have that opinion even if I didn&#8217;t get to attend<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=942\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">a special showing with Kurt Wimmer<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.) \u00a0\u00a0 Sure, the budget was not huge, but look at the talent he scored.\u00a0 What would it cost today to make a movie with<strong> Christian Bale, Emily Watson, Sean Bean<\/strong>, and yes, <strong>Taye Diggs? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Superman Returns<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Britt: <\/strong>This is the big one.
