Davy Jones<\/strong> died today from an apparent heart attack at the age of 66.<\/p>\n Davy Jones<\/strong> was, of course, a member of The Monkees<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Davy<\/strong> was the first Monkee<\/strong><\/em> to be chosen due to his years of showbiz experience.\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/em>It’s a little known fact that Davy Jones<\/strong> appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show<\/strong><\/em> the same night as The Beatles<\/strong><\/em> made their historic appearance… Davy<\/strong> was there performing with the Broadway<\/strong> cast of Oliver!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Monkees<\/strong><\/em> [Davy<\/strong> Jones<\/strong>, along with Mickey Dolenz<\/strong>, Michael Nesmith<\/strong> and Peter Tork<\/strong>] took the world by storm in 1966<\/strong>.\u00a0 The group was hand-picked by Screen Gems<\/strong> in an effort to create a tv show<\/strong> about a group of young musicians.\u00a0 Lightning struck and the group not only had a hit tv series<\/strong> but became one of the biggest selling bands<\/strong> of the 60’s<\/strong>.\u00a0 In 1967<\/strong>, The Monkees<\/strong><\/em> sold more albums than The Beatles<\/strong><\/em> and The Rolling Stones<\/strong><\/em> combined.\u00a0 The Monkees<\/strong><\/em> even appeared in a feature film called Head<\/strong><\/em> that was co-written by Jack Nicholson<\/strong>!<\/p>\n I was a huge Monkees<\/strong><\/em> fan and like many kids my age [7], Davy<\/strong> was my favorite Monkee<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 I collected their albums, trading cards, comic books<\/strong> and magazines<\/strong>.\u00a0 I had a model of The Monkeemobile<\/strong>.\u00a0 I even followed The Monkees<\/strong><\/em> after Peter<\/strong>, then later Mike<\/strong>, quit the band.\u00a0 I was always happy to see Davy<\/strong> pop up on tv<\/strong> [“Love American Style”, “The Brady Bunch”<\/strong><\/em>, etc.] or in a stage production or on one of the many reunion tours The Monkees<\/strong><\/em> did over the years.\u00a0 Sadly, I never got to see them perform live.<\/p>\n I recently watched two Biography<\/strong> specials.\u00a0 One was on The Monkees<\/strong><\/em> and the other focused on Davy Jones<\/strong>.\u00a0 Davy<\/strong> seemed happy with his life and ever-grateful for his fans.\u00a0 Not too long ago Mark Evanier posted<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> a piece that supported Davy’s kindness<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> and appreciation to his fans.\u00a0 Davy Jones<\/strong> was that rare entertainer<\/strong> who could sing, dance,<\/strong> and act… and who never took his talents or his fans for granted.<\/p>\n Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Davy Jones died today from an apparent heart attack at the age of 66.
