{"id":8046,"date":"2013-03-30T01:33:21","date_gmt":"2013-03-30T05:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=8046"},"modified":"2021-03-21T16:51:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-21T20:51:00","slug":"who-should-play-snake-plissken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=8046","title":{"rendered":"Who Should Play Snake Plissken?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2013\/z033012snake_plissken.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"379\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/b>There&#8217;s been a lot of talk lately about rebooting <strong>Snake Plissken<\/strong> from <em><strong>Escape to New York<\/strong><\/em> fame. \u00a0The new plan calls for a trilogy of films with a new actor playing <strong>Snake Plissken<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although I like the idea, I&#8217;m not lining up for ticket just yet. \u00a0Way back in <strong>2006<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=1271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>it was reported<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that <strong>John Carpenter<\/strong> and <strong>Kurt Russell<\/strong> were meeting with studio execs about making a third <strong>Snake Plissken<\/strong>\u00a0movie to be titled\u00a0<em><strong>Escape from Earth<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The movie never materialized.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then in <strong>2007<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=1425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>it was announced<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that\u00a0<strong>Gerard Butler<\/strong>\u00a0[star of the fan favorite and record setting\u00a0<strong>&#8220;300&#8221;<\/strong>] was set to take on the role of\u00a0<strong>Snake Plissken <\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Ken Nolan<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>[&#8220;Black Hawk Down&#8221;<\/strong>] was on board to produce the screenplay which would have updated the\u00a0<strong>1981 John Carpenter<\/strong>\u00a0script.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Again, nada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When <strong>Kurt Russell<\/strong> was asked his thoughts about a remake of <em><strong>Escape from New York<\/strong><\/em> with <strong>Gerard Butler<\/strong> as <strong>Snake<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=1431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Russell responded<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, &#8220;I am <strong>Snake Plissken<\/strong>&#8230;\u00a0I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is,\u00a0<strong>American. \u00a0<\/strong>I have nothing against<strong>\u00a0Gerard Butler<\/strong>. I think he was great in\u00a0<em><strong>300<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and I expect him to do other cool projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of course neither <strong>Butler<\/strong> nor <strong>Russell<\/strong> got a chance to play <strong>Snake<\/strong> in a remake because it never happened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Three years<\/strong> later <a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?s=plissken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>we were told<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<em><strong>Escape from New York<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was being prepped for a reboot.\u00a0The<strong> Plissken <\/strong>role made famous by<strong> [Kurt] Russell <\/strong>would be re-cast with a yet-to-be named actor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That resulted in&#8230; nothing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So a little over a week ago when <a href=\"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=8005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>the news broke<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that there had been movement on a trilogy of <strong>Snake Plissken<\/strong> movies, I didn&#8217;t hold my breath. \u00a0I did suggest that <strong>Guy Pearce<\/strong> would be my choice to play <strong>Snake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of course that goes against <strong>Kurt Russell&#8217;s<\/strong> thoughts that not only should <strong>Snake<\/strong> be an <strong>American<\/strong>, but the actor playing him should be as well. \u00a0As <strong>Russell told Empire in a recent interview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it comes to Snake, I can tell you one thing&#8230; he\u2019s American. It\u2019s really important that he\u2019s American. There\u2019s a reason why that great fight in the arena [in Escape From New York] is with a baseball bat. That\u2019s American, OK? He knows what he\u2019s doing with that bat in his hand!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s also interesting to note that <strong>Russell<\/strong> no longer feels he should be the one to play <strong>Snake<\/strong>. \u00a0As he told<strong> John Carpenter<\/strong> in this exchange <strong>from the same interview in Empire:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCould I do it again?\u201d asks Russell, shaking his head. \u201cNo.\u201d. Carpenter interjects: \u201cHe could do Old Snake.\u201d Russell sighs. \u201cI never wanted to do Snake old.\u201d \u201cWhy not?\u201d asks Carpenter. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to do him,\u201d expands Russell, \u201cdo him young.
