\n<\/em><\/b>There’s been a lot of talk lately about rebooting Snake Plissken<\/strong> from Escape to New York<\/strong><\/em> fame. \u00a0The new plan calls for a trilogy of films with a new actor playing Snake Plissken<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Although I like the idea, I’m not lining up for ticket just yet. \u00a0Way back in 2006<\/strong>, it was reported<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that John Carpenter<\/strong> and Kurt Russell<\/strong> were meeting with studio execs about making a third Snake Plissken<\/strong>\u00a0movie to be titled\u00a0Escape from Earth<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The movie never materialized.<\/p>\n

Then in 2007<\/strong>, it was announced<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that\u00a0Gerard Butler<\/strong>\u00a0[star of the fan favorite and record setting\u00a0“300”<\/strong>] was set to take on the role of\u00a0Snake Plissken <\/strong>and\u00a0Ken Nolan<\/strong>\u00a0[“Black Hawk Down”<\/strong>] was on board to produce the screenplay which would have updated the\u00a01981 John Carpenter<\/strong>\u00a0script.<\/p>\n

Again, nada.<\/p>\n

When Kurt Russell<\/strong> was asked his thoughts about a remake of Escape from New York<\/strong><\/em> with Gerard Butler<\/strong> as Snake<\/strong>, Russell responded<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, “I am Snake Plissken<\/strong>…\u00a0I do think that character was quintessentially one thing. And that is,\u00a0American. \u00a0<\/strong>I have nothing against\u00a0Gerard Butler<\/strong>. I think he was great in\u00a0300<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and I expect him to do other cool projects.”<\/p>\n

Of course neither Butler<\/strong> nor Russell<\/strong> got a chance to play Snake<\/strong> in a remake because it never happened.<\/p>\n

Three years<\/strong> later we were told<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Escape from New York<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was being prepped for a reboot.\u00a0The Plissken <\/strong>role made famous by [Kurt] Russell <\/strong>would be re-cast with a yet-to-be named actor.<\/p>\n

That resulted in… nothing.<\/p>\n

So a little over a week ago when the news broke<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that there had been movement on a trilogy of Snake Plissken<\/strong> movies, I didn’t hold my breath. \u00a0I did suggest that Guy Pearce<\/strong> would be my choice to play Snake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Of course that goes against Kurt Russell’s<\/strong> thoughts that not only should Snake<\/strong> be an American<\/strong>, but the actor playing him should be as well. \u00a0As Russell told Empire in a recent interview:<\/strong><\/p>\n

When it comes to Snake, I can tell you one thing… he\u2019s American. It\u2019s really important that he\u2019s American. There\u2019s a reason why that great fight in the arena [in Escape From New York] is with a baseball bat. That\u2019s American, OK? He knows what he\u2019s doing with that bat in his hand!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It’s also interesting to note that Russell<\/strong> no longer feels he should be the one to play Snake<\/strong>. \u00a0As he told John Carpenter<\/strong> in this exchange from the same interview in Empire:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCould I do it again?\u201d asks Russell, shaking his head. \u201cNo.\u201d. Carpenter interjects: \u201cHe could do Old Snake.\u201d Russell sighs. \u201cI never wanted to do Snake old.\u201d \u201cWhy not?\u201d asks Carpenter. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to do him,\u201d expands Russell, \u201cdo him young. He\u2019s one of those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Since Guy Pearce<\/strong> is Australian<\/strong>, who should play Snake<\/strong>? \u00a0I’ll have to get back to you on that… when the remake is a little closer to reality.<\/p>\n
