{"id":8370,"date":"2013-06-11T01:54:35","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T05:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=8370"},"modified":"2021-05-22T09:44:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-22T13:44:54","slug":"heroescon-2013-zs-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=8370","title":{"rendered":"Z-View: HeroesCon 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2013\/z061113heroes_report.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That&#8217;s the self-titled\u00a0<strong>Corduroy Mafia<\/strong> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heroesonline.com\/heroescon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Heroes Con 2013<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0From left to right we have <strong>Brian Jones<\/strong>, me,\u00a0<strong>Gene Gonzales<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>John Nacinovich<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Royce Thrower<\/strong>. How we gave ourselves the name <strong>Corduroy Mafia<\/strong> is a tale for another time. \u00a0Instead I present my <strong>HeroesCon 2013<\/strong> summary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Drive Up:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Doralya<\/strong> and I left Friday morning. \u00a0We planned to leave earlier, but a late start got us on the road at about 5am. \u00a0Traffic was terrible, two different wrecks slowed us down and it rained almost the entire way. \u00a0From now on, we plan to drive up the night before the con starts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The hotel:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We usually stay at the <strong>Weston<\/strong>, but this year it was the <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptoninn3.hilton.com\/en\/hotels\/north-carolina\/hampton-inn-charlotte-uptown-CLTUTHX\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hampton Inn Charlotte &#8211; Uptown<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0What a great hotel! \u00a0It&#8217;s super-clean with the friendliest staff I&#8217;ve ever seen. \u00a0Free shuttle service and free breakfast made the stay even better. I&#8217;d definitely stay here again!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Main Goal of the Show:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My main goal was to meet (for the first time) and get a sketch from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RickBurchett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rick Burchett<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m happy to report that\u00a0<strong>Rick<\/strong>\u00a0is as nice as he is talented &#8212; yeah, he&#8217;s really that friendly! \u00a0I hoped to get <strong>Rick<\/strong> to draw Jack Carter (<strong>Stallone<\/strong>) with <strong>Chris Mills\/Rick Burchett&#8217;s<\/strong> character, Grave Digger (<strong>Lee Marvin<\/strong>). \u00a0<strong>Rick<\/strong> said he could make that happen!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I then got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gregrucka.com\/wp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Greg Rucka<\/strong><\/a> to autograph two of my <strong>Atticus Kodiac<\/strong> novels. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been a <strong>Rucka<\/strong> fan since before he started working in comics &#8212; and was pleased when he teamed with <strong>Rick Burchett<\/strong> on <strong>Lady Sabre<\/strong>. \u00a0<strong>Eric Newsome<\/strong> was at the table as well. <strong>\u00a0Eric<\/strong> assists with the <strong>Lady Sabre<\/strong> website and more. \u00a0Since I am a backer of their <strong>Lady Sabre<\/strong> Kickstarter, I knew the password to get an advance look at a <strong>Lady Sabre<\/strong> script! \u00a0<strong>Eric<\/strong> also reminded me that he had done <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/wordpress\/?s=newsome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Stallone sketch for the SZ!<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It was great talking to <strong>Rick<\/strong>, <strong>Greg<\/strong> and <strong>Eric<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Books signed:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>My original hardcover <strong>Berni Wrightson&#8217;s A Look Back<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>My first edition <strong>Chandler by Steranko<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Two of my\u00a0<strong>Greg Rucka Atticus Kodiac<\/strong> novels<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>Road Trip by Sean Murphy<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All books autographed &#8212; mission accomplished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sketches:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dave Wachter<\/strong> (mini-head sketches): Lords of Flatbush and Bullet to the Head<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drew Moss<\/strong> (busts): Get Carter and Rocky<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jerry Gaylord<\/strong>: Get Carter and Demolition Man<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mitch Gerads<\/strong> (head sketch): Expendables 2<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mike Torrance<\/strong>: several sketch cards<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gene Gonzales<\/strong> (head sketch): Get Carter<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manny Aguilera<\/strong>: Over the Top and Demolition Man\u00a0(surprise gifts from <strong>LittleJohn312<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Patricia<\/strong>), Get Carter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rick Burchett<\/strong> is going to do my piece from home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Panels<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Inkwell Awards<\/strong> (and keeping with tradition, <strong>LittleJohn312<\/strong> and <strong>Patricia<\/strong> joined me).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jim Steranko<\/strong> (again with LJ &amp; P) &#8211; <strong>Steranko<\/strong> is a charmer and\u00a0captivated the crowd with his great stories!<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Crime Panel<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0<strong>Greg Rucka<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Whiteout<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Jason Latour<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Loose Ends<\/em>), and\u00a0<strong>Jason Aaron<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Scalped<\/em>) interrogated by\u00a0<strong>Vito Delsante. \u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s only been in the last several years that I&#8217;ve made a real effort to attend panels. \u00a0Without a doubt, they have made the con experience even more fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Drink and Draw<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because of weather it was held in the lobby of the <strong>Hilton<\/strong>. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jacktheradio.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jack the Radio<\/strong><\/a> provided live music &#8212; they&#8217;re good! \u00a0The place was packed, but the <strong>Hilton<\/strong> staff was very accommodating and brought out more seats. <strong>Patricia<\/strong>, <strong>Doralya<\/strong> and I enjoyed watching and messing with<strong> LittleJohn312<\/strong> as he attempted to win some art &#8212; and he did!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>HeroesCon<\/strong><strong> Auction<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As always the auction was a fun night. \u00a0<strong>LittleJohn312<\/strong> won a <em><strong>Wizard of Oz<\/strong><\/em> piece (as well as the companion piece that was in next day&#8217;s auction). \u00a0The move to have professional auctioneers is helpful, but <strong>Alison&#8217;s<\/strong> presence as the <strong>Mistress of Ceremonies<\/strong> was missed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Kickstarter:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some <strong>HeroesCon<\/strong> guests had <strong>Kickstarter<\/strong> projects that I had backed. \u00a0I made sure to swing by and congratulate each on their <strong>Kickstarter<\/strong> success:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><strong>Greg Rucka<\/strong> \/ <strong>Rick Burchett<\/strong> with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Lady<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sabre<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeremy Haun<\/strong> with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Bad<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Karma<\/strong><\/span> \u00a0(I missed seeing <strong>Alex Grecian<\/strong>, <strong>B.
