{"id":8499,"date":"2013-07-01T01:13:06","date_gmt":"2013-07-01T05:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=8499"},"modified":"2021-03-21T16:59:59","modified_gmt":"2021-03-21T20:59:59","slug":"the-evolution-of-zombies-in-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/craigzablo.com\/?p=8499","title":{"rendered":"The Evolution of Zombies in Film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/stallonezone.com\/zone\/2013\/z070113zombie_evolution.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Like most of you, I&#8217;m a fan of (most) zombie movies. \u00a0Recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/a> took a look at <em><strong>&#8220;Night of the Living Dead&#8221; to &#8220;World War Z&#8221;: The Evolution of Zombie Movies<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0The title of the article is a little deceptive since the first zombie movie they look at is <strong>1932&#8217;s<\/strong> <em><strong>White Zombie<\/strong><\/em> that starred <strong>Bela Lugosi <\/strong>(which premiered 37 years before<em><strong> Night of the Living Dead<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But I digress,\u00a0the article shows how zombies\u00a0in movies have changed over the years. \u00a0Initially zombies were people put into a trance or raised from the dead. \u00a0Slowly\u00a0zombies\u00a0became\u00a0anyone who had lost self-control and were influenced by some outside source (black magic, aliens, etc.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>George Romero<\/strong> reinvigorated\u00a0the zombie genre with his classic <em><strong>Night of the Living Dead<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0<strong>Romero&#8217;s zombies<\/strong> were the standard for several years and then folks started to play with the zombie concept. \u00a0This led to zombies that could learn, zombies that could run, zombie comedies, and even a zombie romance. \u00a0Yeesh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using just the films in <strong>The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong> post, here are <strong>my top five<\/strong> and a couple of closing comments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Night of the Living Dead<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> (1968): <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: justify;\">George Romero<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> set the bar high, reinvented the <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">zombie<\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> movie and <\/span><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>NOTLD<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> remains the standard to shoot for when making a <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">zombie<\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> movie<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>28 Days Later<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> (2002): While pureists would argue that <\/span><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>28 Days Later<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> isn&#8217;t a <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">zombie<\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> movie, I disagree. \u00a0Not only is it a <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">zombie<\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> movie, it&#8217;s a great one.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"text-align: justify;\">World War Z<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> (2013): Yeah, I agree. \u00a0<\/span><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>World War Z<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> the movie is not <\/span><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>World War Z<\/strong> <\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">the novel. \u00a0To those who complain that the movie isn&#8217;t the book, I say, &#8220;Of course not. \u00a0It&#8217;s a movie and a very good one! If you want the book, it&#8221;s still available.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Dawn of the Dead<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> (1979): <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: justify;\">Romero&#8217;s<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> return to the genre that made him world famous. \u00a0I saw it twice in the original theatrical run. \u00a0The first time was with my wife-to-be and we walked out after the helicopter scene. \u00a0The gore was just too much for her. \u00a0I returned to a later showing without her and my appreciation of a <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">zombie apocalypse<\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Zombieland<\/strong> <\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">(2009): <\/span><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Zombieland<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> wasn&#8217;t the first <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: justify;\">zombie comedy<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">, but for my money it is the best. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some final thoughts: I love well-done apocalyptic movies and a zombie film can easily fill the bill. \u00a0I don&#8217;t care if the zombies move fast or slow.
