Rest in Peace: Casey Kasem

Casey Kasem died today.  Mr. Kasem was 82 and had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Kasem was best known as the host of his American Top 40 Countdown which appropriately enough counted down Billboard’s best selling records each week.  Casey Kasem also did voice work for commercials, and cartoons (most notably as the voice of Shaggy on the long-running Scooby Doo series).

I was a big fan of the Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 Countdown when I was a kid.  In the last few years I made rebroadcasts of Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 Countdown: The 70’s a part of my Sunday morning routine.  I listened to it as I updated the StalloneZone.

Casey Kasem usually ended his show by saying, “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”   Sage advice from a man who did just that.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Casey Karem’s family, friends and fans.

Stephen King: “Best Horror Series Ever”

Quick – What’s the best horror series ever put on television?

My guess is that many of you immediately thought of The Twilight Zone [not only horror, but did have some scary episodes], The Outer Limits [Twilight Zoneish], The Invaders, The Night Gallery… and so on.

But… how many of you immediately thought of Thriller?

Stephen King did.  In fact King described Thriller  as…

“…probably the best horror series ever put on TV.”

Classic Film and TV provides a nice overview of Thriller with links to additional information.  If you’ve read this far, you’d probably enjoy clicking over.

King Conan Teaser Poster: Let the Lamentations Begin

I know just the thought of a King Conan  teaser poster starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to excite  a lot of Schwarzenegger and Conan fans [myself included].

Unfortunately the poster isn’t as strong as I had hoped.

I know I’m going to get blasted by fans for saying this, but the poster looks like Conan/Schwarzengger [suffering with rosacea] calmly holding a sword.

I wanted something more.

Let the lamentations of the fans begin.

Joel Carroll and Jack Carter

I’ve known Joel Carroll for several years.  Whenever I would talk to Joel about a Stallone sketch Joel would beg off because he felt he wasn’t good at capturing likenesses.

Recently Joel was sketching for charity and I hit him up again.  It was for charity so how could Joel refuse?  He didn’t and you can see the end result above.  I really like it!

You can see more of Joel’s art on twitter.

The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde…

… [the] Depression era Romeo and Juliet. Brandishing high-powered machine guns and driving the newly invented Ford V-8s, Bonnie and Clyde are mythologized as Robin Hoods for the poor and destitute who had been failed by the American political and financial institutions…

If you’d like to know more about Bonnie and Clyde here are a couple of excellent sources:

Scott Quick Draw Jack Carter

One of the things I love about going to comic book conventions is meeting new artists… or at least artists that are new to me.  When I was at MegaCon this year, I met Scott Quick.

Scott does the web strip Camden Bottoms.  I took a look at Scott’s sketchbook and decided to see if he’d be interested in doing a Stallone sketch.  He was.  I ended up getting two.  This is the second.  I’ll post the first next week.  In the mean time check out Scott’s Camden Bottoms!
