A Legitimate Tough Guy

Chuck Zito.

If you know the name, it might be because Chuck is a co-star on Oz.

Then again, it could be because Zito has worked as a bodyguard to the stars (Michael Jackson, Sylvester Stallone [note the chain that he’s wearing], Liza Minelli and many others).

Maybe you know him as the guy who knocked out Jean Claude Van Damme with one punch. Or it could be because Chuck is a member of the Hell’s Angels.

Chuck Zito is a legitimate tough guy. Note I didn’t say “good guy.”

Check out his website and you’ll get to know a bit about Chuck Zito. He’s lived an amazing life and he covers it [warts and all] in his excellent autobiography Street Justice.

Read it and to know him any better you’d have to meet him. : )

Two Kinds of Hostage

Finally another movie that I can get excited about!

Hostage starring Bruce Willis in a screenplay by Robert Crais [based on the novel of the same name by Crais] has the potential to be really, really good.

Blackfilm.com has posted the first pics from the movie and you can see them HERE.

Willis plays a former hostage negotiator who is now the police chief of a small community where nothing much ever happens. That is until a botched 7-11 robbery turns into a hostage situation when the three young crooks take a family hostage. To make matters even worse… the father of the family is an accountant for a mobster.

Trust me, Hostage is a movie to watch. And Hostage the novel is one to read. 🙂

The Hits Keep on Coming

While surfing the web, I came across this great little interview with Robert B. Parker. It’s a brief interview, but packs in a ton of interesting information about Parker; how he writes, the surprisingly little research that he does, and why he and his wife live on different floors in the same house.

Parker has been writing novels for over 30 years and at the age of 72 shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, this year alone, Parker‘s had three books published and each of them hit the best seller list!

Bad Business was the 31st Spenser novel [and if you like to read you owe it to yourself to check out the entire Spenser series].

Melancholy Baby was the fourth to feature female detective Sunny Randall.

And last, and definitely not least was Double Play.

Double Play is one of my all-time favorite books by Robert B. Parker. Set in 1947, the novel focuses on the relationship between Joe Burke [a hardened WWII vet with a death wish who has been hired to bodyguard Jackie Robinson] and Jackie Robinson [the first black man to break into the major leagues]. Along the way there’s gangsters, dames, double-crosses, murders and more. It was truly a great read and I hope that Parker writes more Joe Burke novels.

Knowing how prolific Robert B. Parker is, I’d say that’s a good bet!

Nightscape

I’ve been a David Morrell fan ever since I read First Blood, way back in the early 70’s. [Yeah, long before I even knew who Sylvester Stallone was!]

It doesn’t matter if it’s all out action, a thriller, horror, suspenseMorrell can write it all.

I just discovered that his second volume of short stories, Nightscape, has been published.

I’m putting in my order tonight.

Hurricane Jeanne and Rain Storm

Hurricane Jeanne came and went without causing as much damage to our area as initially predicted. Still, I spent most of the last three days helping to run a hurricane relief shelter.

One of the best parts of that whole experience was that in my downtime I had an opportunity to finish Barry Eisler‘s third novel, Rain Storm.

All of Eisler‘s novels feature John Rain, a Japanese-American “struggling with his own divided nature: Japanese / American; soldier / assassin; samurai / ronin.” Rain, as written by Eisler is “a remarkable creation, a multifaceted killer with the soul of a poet.”

Eisler‘s first book, Rain Fall, put him on my favorite author’s list. His second, Hard Rain, proved that the first book wasn’t a fluke. Rain Storm cements Eisler‘s place as one of the best series writers working. Don’t take my word for it, check out what EVERYONE is saying.

Yeah, Eisler‘s that good. [So is John Rain, for that matter!]

"One Busy Horror Writing Machine"

Steve Niles is one of my favorite writers.

Niles writes screenplays, novels and comic books. If that sounds like a lot of writing, it is.

But so far I’ve enjoyed everything that Niles has written [especially the Cal McDonald novels].

Steve‘s got a lot more stuff coming out in the next year.

Click HERE and you can get a peek at what he has planned.

Who knows maybe you’ll become a fan too!

Another Welcome Rain

Critics have praised Barry Eisler‘s first two novels, Rain Fall and Hard Rain, calling Japanese-American John Rain, the cynical, romantic, conscientious assassin, “one of the most memorable characters in recent thrillers.”

Yeah, I’d go along with that.

In fact Eisler‘s two novels featuring John Rain have been some of the best novels that I’ve read in the last few years.

So you can imagine how much I’m looking forward to his latest, Rain Storm.

Time to Take Things Easy

Walter Mosley‘s eighth Easy Rawlins novel is now available and I’m putting in my order!

I’ve read, and enjoyed all of the Easy Rawlins‘ stories and Little Scarlet, set during the Watts riots of 1965, looks to be a welcome addition to the series. Easy, an unlicensed PI, along with his best friend, the cold-blooded killer called Mouse, find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation which could land Easy in jail or dead.

Devil in a Blue Dress is the only film adaptation of an Easy Rawlins‘ novel, and although it didn’t set the box office on fire, it’s definitely worth a look. Denzel Washington plays Easy Rawlins, but the movie is OWNED by Don Cheadle as Mouse. Jennifer Beals, looking as pretty as ever, also co-stars in this excellent film by Carl Franklin.

Yeah, I think I’ll order the book tonight and pull the dvd off the shelf. It’s time I spent a little time taking things Easy.

Everybody Loves Hellboy

Everyone loves Hellboy. What’s not to love?

He’s one of the coolest characters in comics. Each mini-series is always highly anticipated and then goes on to become a best selling trade paperback. Hellboy short story collections and the art of Hellboy books have been winners as well.

But could Hellboy be made into a good movie?

The answer is a resounding, “YES!”  because everyone loves Hellboy!

Con Man’s Daughter

I think I’ve found a great character for Sly to bring to the big screen!

Ed Dee Dee introduces ex-cop, ex-prize-fighter Eddie “God help me… I love a brawl” Dunn in his latest novel, The Con Man’s Daughter.

Dunn was a decorated NY City Detective who was forced to resign in disgrace and then worked for a Russian mobster. Now in his mid-50’s and retired, Dunn must return to the mean streets of New York and go toe to toe with a variety of the worst that the city has to offer in order to save his kidnapped daughter.

If you like hard boiled heroes and stories that keep you guessing, then this one is for you… and Sly!

Halloween Fun!

Man, I love Halloween!

As we get closer to the big night, I find myself drawn to scary books and movies. For some reason even more so than usual this year. Maybe it’s because there are so many good ones available.

I just finished reading Steve Niles’ Dial M for Monster. Dial M is a book of short stories featuring his monster hunter, Cal McDonald. You’ve heard me praise Niles’ work before and this book is no exception. I love everything about the world Niles has created for Cal [and I’m especially glad I can safely visit without fear of vampires, werewolves, fiends or other creatures coming after me!]. I’d suggest that you start with Guns, Drugs and Monsters [the first novel in the series] and then follow it up with Savage Membrane [the second].

If you’d like to get a taste of Niles’ work before commiting to a novel, then by all means check out 30 Days of Night. This award winning comic series [with art by the extremely talented Ben Templesmith] is being developed into a feature film produced by none other than Sam Raimi! Why wait for the film? The graphic novel is available now and well worth every penny!

Changing gears just a bit… on Tuesday, one of my two favorite movies so far this year, becomes available! That’s right 28 Days Later is available Tuesday! Man, I can’t wait!

If you’ve read this far, then you’re probably a real horror fan. You probably already know that a Dawn of the Dead remake starring Ving Rhames is coming out next March. But did you know that
the trailer is available now? At first I didn’t think that a re-make of Dawn of the Dead was a good idea since the original trilogy [Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead] by George Romero are considered cult classics. But I did like the remake of Night of the Living Dead ]… plus Ving Rhames is starring… so why not? Plus, it’ll give me one more thing to love about Halloween!

Shutter Island & More

  • Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane is one of the best novels I’ve read this year. Publisher’s Weekly said it best: Shutter Island “carries an ending so shocking yet so faithful to what has come before, that it will go down as one of the most aesthetically right resolutions ever written.”
  • Gregory Hines, the award-winning tap-dancing actor who starred on Broadway and film died yesterday at the age of 57. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and fans.
  • German producers who backed Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” said there could be another sequel even if he succeeds in becoming Governor of California. Does this sound like a good idea to anyone?
  • After a six year absence, James Cameron has signed on to helm a film about the extreme sport of free diving. Does this sound like a good idea to anyone?
  • Britney Spears is in talks to executive produce [but not host] her very own syndicated talk show. Does this sound like a good idea to anyone?

Odd But True

  • Let’s start off with a strange trailer today… “Bubba Ho-Tep” is a horror-comedy starring Bruce Campbell as an old Elvis impersonator who has to fight off evil… well, take a look. If you like it, you’ll say, “Thank you… thank you very much.”
  • Michael Crichton’s best seller, Timeline, is coming to the big screen! The trailer rocks! See it and then check out the book before the movie premieres!
  • I’ve been talking about how cool “Underworld” looks — any movie with vampires and werewolves has gotta be at least somewhat cool — anyway, there’s a new trailer online now. This one just keeps looking better and better!
  • BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Ozzy Osbourne’s tour manager, in town for the Ozzfest heavy metal music festival, was found dead in his hotel room, the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office said today. You just know this is going to mess Ozzy up.
  • ROCKY M0UNT, Va. (Reuters) – Prosecutors accused three teen-age boys of promoting fist fights between boys who were in their care at a summer camp and charging other campers admission to watch the boxing matches. Only in America!
  • LONDON (Reuters) – An elderly British man who lived in a run-down house, bought second-hand clothes and watched television at his neighbor’s to save on electricity left a million pounds to a dog charity and nothing to his daughters, newspapers reported on Friday. Well, dogs are man’s best friends!
  • BERLIN (Reuters) – A giant catfish that ate a dog and terrorized a German lake for years has washed up dead, but the legend of “Kuno the Killer” lives on. Well, dogs are not catfish’s best friends!
  • SAN FRANCISCORick Beal wanted to grab some cash on the way to the airport — so he hired a limo and allegedly robbed a bank on the way. “Just leave the motor running… I’ll be right back!”
