Dick Giordano’s Demolition Man #6

Dick Giordano, the comics legend is back! During his fifty plus years in the biz he’s done everything from ink all the greats (including himself) to serve as Editor-in-Chief of DC Comics, to co-founding his own comic company.

I had the good fortune to pick up six model sheet headsketches of Sly that Mr. Giodano did before starting work on DC Comics adaptation of “Demolition Man”. This is the sixth. To see all of the other headsketches, click here.

Avery Cates on the Silver Screen

I’ve been on the Jeff Somers bandwagon since before I even read his first Avery Cates’ novelThe Electric Church.  It was described as “Blade Runner meets The Dirty Dozen, with a dash of Sergio Leone” and that was enough to check it out.  I read the first chapter for free and then discovered Jeff Somers’ blog. I then ordered The Electric Church and totally loved it.  It’s hard to believe, but I dug the next Avery Cates’ novel, The Digital Plaque even more!  The third in the series, The Eternal Prison, was another fine addition.

Today it was announced that Sony Pictures has picked up movie rights to the Avery Cates series.  Congrats to Jeff Sumers [who should take a day to celebrate and then get back to work on the next Avery Cates adventure]!

Gorn “Star” [Trek]

The MTV Movies Blog is reporting that when asked about the Star Trek  sequel, JJ Abrams responded:

“I have to admit the [‘Star Trek’ sequel] is really all about the Gorn.”

I  hope that JJ Abrams was just throwing out an idea and is really considering using the Gorn for the next Star Trek movie.

Sure, looking back, the alien costume is really funky looking [yeah, I guess it was even when the original show aired], but that episode was always one of my favorites.

Can you imagine how scary-repulsive-cool the FX crew could make the Gorn look with today’s technology?

Yeah, bring on Kirk [Spock and the crew] vs the Gorn!

Sly Checks In

This was too cool not to post here as well as at the StalloneZone.

Sly has been following some of the discussions on the message boards and wanted to set the record straight:

Dear Craig,

For the doubters and the haters, a picture is worth a thousand words. You
walk the walk, you pay a price. But, as bad as it was at least we have it on
film.

Keep punchin’
Sly

P.S. To the haters, I don’t need to invent pain, there’s enough of it out
there to go around.

P.S.S. The reason I was never seen in a neck brace is because I stayed home
for three weeks to heal.

P.S.S.S. Van Damme may mean a great deal to some of you, but what he’s
putting forth is not truthful.

So there you have it, SZoners. Don’t waste your time arguing with the doubters and the haters. – Craig

Treece’s “Machine Gun” Joe

This week we have Jeremy Treece’s take on Sly as “Machine Gun” Joe from “Death Race 2000”. This sketchcard was gifted to me by a StalloneZone fan [LittleJohn312] and arrived in my mail unannounced. I really like what Jeremy did and hope to get more work from him in the future.  You can also see more of his art here.

Thanks to LittleJohn312 and Jeremy for a great surprise!

Otis Frampton’s Cosmo

Otis Frampton loves sharing his talents with his fans. Every Sunday [okay, ALMOST, every Sunday], Otis has a live UStream broadcast that he calls the 7×7 Sunday. Lucky fans can get a headsketch of ANY character drawn live by Otis on a 7X7 inch bristol board for 7 bucks postage paid. It’s the best deal going.

I’ve been lucky enough to get four pieces from Otis and the Cosmo Carboni from “Paradise Alley” shown above is one of them. I’ll be showing the rest in the coming weeks. In the mean time, check out Otis’ Gallery. Most likely, after seeing more of his work, I’ll be competing against you in Otis’ next 7×7 Sunday.

Tom Hodges’ Jack Carter

This week we have Jack Carter as realized by Tom Hodges. I discovered Tom’s art through his DA site and then last August, Tom had a 24 Hour Draw-A-Thon live on UStream. I got on board and commissioned the Jack Carter above and a Rambo which will be posted in a few weeks. Tom still draws regularly on UStream and it’s always fun watching him go at it.
