Robbi Rodriguez & Machine Gun Joe

Robbi Rodroguez did a Rocky sketch for me at last year’s Heroes Convention. When I saw that Robbi was going to be at Heroes again this year and was taking commissions early, I asked for an iconic black and white piece of Sly as Jack Carter. Robbi knew exactly what I was looking for and came through like a champ with this piece. I was totally blown away.

So I requested another Stallone piece, this time totally of Robbi’s choosing. He decided to go with Sly as Machine Gun Joe Viterbo from Death Race 2000. It was a unique choice that I quickly got behind. Robbi not only drew Machine Gun Joe standing in his race car with a smoking machine gun, but threw in Joe’s co-pilot as well. I can’t say enough great things about Robbi’s commissions except that I want another!

You can see more of Robbi’s art here and here… and definitely again here at the SZ in the future.

THR: Frank Darabont Was FIRED!

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Frank Darabont was fired from The Walking Dead! Here are some tidbits from the article:

  • When Frank Darabont appeared on a Comic-Con panel July 22 to promote The Walking Dead, he didn’t realize he was a dead man walking. Neither did the cast and crew.
  • One insider says those gathered were stunned at “the duplicity of AMC” for having used Darabont to promote the show at Comic-Con before firing him.
  • But this source says that AMC had its own ideas about how to make the show more cheaply. The show shoots for eight days per episode, and the network suggested that half should be indoors. “Four days inside and four days out? That’s not Walking Dead,” says this insider. “This is not a show that takes place around the dinner table.” That was just one of what this person describes as “silly notes” from AMC. Couldn’t the audience hear the zombies sometimes and not see them, to save on makeup? The source says Darabont fought “a constant battle to keep the show big in scope and style.”

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

At ComicCon this past weekend, Robert Rodriguez announced that “Frank [Miller] has written a script for Sin City 2It could shoot as early as later this year.

The Sin City sequel will follow the same format as the original movie with three interconnected tales. “A Dame to Kill For” will be the main title and is based on the Frank Miller story of the same name. The Long Bad Night is the second yarn with no mention of the third’s title at this point.

The Package: I’m In

I learned about The Package by Elliot Blake and Alexis Ziritt, through Kickstarter.  I liked what I read and decided to become a backer.  Here’s what got me on board:

  • THE PACKAGE, an original 56-page crime graphic novel written by Elliot Blake and illustrated by Alexis Ziritt, is the story of Fred Cutler, a shallow mob gunman who survives an attempt on his life only to wake up and find there’s a small bomb in his chest. It was planted there by Paz Huerta, the beautiful young woman who saved his life, because she sees in him her one best chance to get something she’s wanted more than anything: revenge for the death of her father at the hands of Fred’s boss, Los Angeles gangster Rafi Vega. Like it or not, Fred’s going to have to help Paz, because she’s not taking no for an answer – and she’s the one with her finger on the detonator.

Frank Miller Creates a Holy Terror

Here’s the teaser trailer for Frank Miller’s Holy Terror graphic novel.  Check it out and then we’ll talk.

So, what’d ya think?  Yeah.  Me, too.  It’s no secret that I’m a huge Frank Miller fan.  I’ve bought everything that he’s done since his DareDevil days and loved almost all of it.  The jury is out on Holy Terror.  The art isn’t knocking my socks off.  I’m also still a little disappointed that Frank decided to change it from a Batman story to a tale about a new character called The Fixer.

Still, my guess is I’ll get a copy/  I am a huge Frank Miller fan, you know.

Dark Shadows Rises Again

No matter how many times you think you’ve killed a vampire, odds are he’ll be back when you least expect it.  Such is the case with Barnabas Collins [as well as the rest of the cast of Dark Shadows].  Then again, maybe the return of Barnabas should be expected now that filming is underway for a new Dark Shadows movie starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton.

The new Dark Shadows comic will be written by Stuart Manning with art by Aaron Campbell. Francesco Fraccavilla and Aaron Campbell will provide the cover art.

Lady Sabre & The Pirates of the Ineffable Aether

Isn’t that the coolest poster?  It’s for a new web comic called Lady Sabre & The Pirates of the Ineffable Aether.  Although I’m not a huge fan of web comics, I’m definitely on board for this one.  Created by author, Greg Rucka and artist, Rick Burchett [two of my favorites], Lady Sabre & The Pirates of the Ineffable Aether is going to be a wild ride.  Here’s how the Greg and Rick describe it…

  • Swords are cool. People fighting with swords are cool. Airships are cool. Cowboys are cool. Pirates are cool. Clockwork men are cool. Smart, savvy, witty women are very cool. Laconic gunslingers? Totally cool. Steampunk? Frosty.
  • That’s what Lady Sabre & the Pirates of the Ineffable Aether is, that’s what it’s about. The adventures of the Lady Seneca Sabre and those she meets along the way as she travels the Sphere. Who she fights, who she foils, who she befriends. It’s about adventure and romance and excitement and, to paraphrase the great Zaphod Beeblebrox, “really wild things.”
  • And most of all, what it’s supposed to be? It’s supposed to be fun.

Lady Sabre & The Pirates of the Ineffable Aether are back every Tuesday and Thursday with a new comic and additional content throughout the week!
