Sean Gordon Murphy Takes on Rocky (& Butkus)

Sean Gordon Murphy is one of those artists who just seems to come out of nowhere with his own distinctive style that you can’t help but love. I met Sean at last year’s Heroes Con. His sketch list was full, but he said he started a new list each day and I should check back the next day. I made sure I was first in line and ended up with this classic piece of Rocky and Butkus.

THIS is the Red Skull

I’ve always liked Captain America.   He’s an iconic super hero.  Of course a hero is only as good as the villain that he goes up against.  From the looks of things, Cap is going to be able to give The Dark Knight a run for his money.  I really dig the look of The Red Skull in the photo above.

I’m starting to have high expectations for the Captain America movie… especially after reading this interview in Entertainment Weekly with director Joe Johnston, because he gets Cap.

  • What I like is he’s not a superhero in the true sense of the word. He becomes a superhero but doesn’t have any super powers. He is just the best possible, human specimen.
  • The thing that appeals to me is he is everyman… he’s a guy who never gives up.
  • Yeah, for Steve Rogers it’s a very personal thing. At one point he says, “I don’t like bullies, I don’t care where they’re from.” He makes a complete physical transformation to a perfect human specimen. But inside he doesn’t change at all.

Powers Coming to FX

Powers, the comic series [by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming] about cops in a world with super heroes and villains, has been given the green light.  The pilot is set to be directed by Michael Dinner [Justified, Sons of Anarchy]; with a script from Charles “Chic” Eglee, [The Walking Dead,The Shield ].   [Via CBR.com]

Sly Stallone Scores a Headshot

  • Way back in October of 2008, I posted about a French crime comic called “Headshot” that had been optioned by Warner Bros.  “Headshot” was about a hitman and cop who, when their partners are killed, form an uneasy alliance to get revenge on the powers that set them up.  At that time, I said that I’d love to see an American edition of the comic and that I’d keep an eye out on the progress of the movie.
  • Today I’m happy to report that “Headshot” is moving forward with Sylvester Stallone playing one of the hitmen and Wayne “Running Scared” Kramer set to direct.
  • Here’s how /Film describes “Headshot”… In the film, Stallone’s character “teams with a young NYPD detective in a high-stakes investigation that leads from the dingy back alleys of New Orleans all the way to the power corridors of Washington, D.C. The unlikely duo, brought together by two vicious murders, take on all who stand in their way, and are willing to sacrifice everything to exact revenge.”
  • IM Global [the company making “Headshot”] CEO Stuart Ford said… “Headshot is exactly the type of fast-paced, universally themed project that suits our business model. Sylvester Stallone is an international icon and we’re really excited to be in business with him.”
  • “Headshot” is set to being filming in May and I couldn’t be happier.

Thomas Boatwright Gets Carter

This is the third, and at this point, last sketch by Thomas Boatwright that I have to post. My first was this First Blood piece. This sketch of Sly as Barney Ross from The Expendables was the second piece. I totally dig them all [although the Jack Carter is probably my favorite].

Who is Jake Ellis?

I don’t read many comic books these days, but one I am really looking forward to is, Who is Jake Ellis.  Written by Nathan Edmondson and with art by Tonci Zonjic, this comic series looks to be not only a change of pace, but a lot of fun. Here’s how Josh Wigler at CBR.com describes, Who is Jake Ellis?…

Unknown to his clients — to anyone, for that matter — is the fact that he’s assisted by Jake Ellis, a seemingly all-knowing entity that nobody can see. Nobody, that is, except for Jon himself.
