Eduardo Risso created the art above of the Joker and Penguin. Of all Batman’s major villains, the Penguin always seemed less intimidating than the others. That is until I saw Risso’s version. His Penguin looks like he could be crazy smart and ready to bite a chunk out of ya!

One of my all-time favorite characters is Marv from Sin City. I wish Frank Miller would either do more Sin City yarns or allow others to have a crack. Phillip Tan created the pin up above for one of the new Sin City 30th Anniversary editions.
On December 7, 2021, the news broke that legendary artist George Perez had inoperable stage three pancreatic cancer. Mr. Perez, 67, is known for his amazing art on titles such as The Teen Titans, Crisis on Infinitive Earths, The Avengers and so many more. George Perez released the following at that time:
“I have Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer. It is surgically inoperable and my estimated life expectancy is between 6 months to a year. I have been given the option of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, but after weighing all the variables and assessing just how much of my remaining days would be eaten up by doctor visits, treatments, hospital stays and dealing with the often stressful and frustrating bureaucracy of the medical system, I’ve opted to just let nature take its course and I will enjoy whatever time I have left as fully as possible with my beautiful wife of 40 years, my family, my friends and my fans.”
Since the announcement, Mr. Perez has posted regular updates on his Facebook page. George Perez has displayed amazing grace, peace of mind and love of live. Shelton Drum, owner of the Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find comic store and creator of HeroesCon, is collecting letters/postcards for George Perez that he will personally deliver. When you think of titles associated with Howard Chaykin, names like American Flagg, Cody Starbuck, Dominic Fortune, Black Kiss, The Scorpion and Monark Starstalker probably come to mind fairly quickly. Then Chaykin’s work on comics like Star Wars, Wolverine, Nick Fury, The Punisher and Avengers may be next. You’d have to go pretty far down the list before you get to Savage Sword of Conan. But that’s what we have today.
Howard Chaykin isn’t an artist most folks think of when talking Conan. (Myself included.) Perhaps we should though since Chaykin created the cover to Savage Sword of Conan #31 shown above. I’ve always liked it. I hope you do as well.
Matt Wagner is best known for his creations Mage and Grendel. Wagner has worked for Comico, Dark Horse, DC, Dynamite, Image and Marvel. Wagner is a talented artist and writer and I’ve followed him on most everything he’s drawn. I’ve always had a special love for Wagner’s riff on Batman. Here are two reasons why.

There was a time when John Byrne was THE man in comics. He could write and draw. Often John Byrne art graced multiple comic covers AND interiors each month. John Byrne is known for his work on Iron Fist, The X-Men. The Fantastic Four, The She-Hulk, Batman, Superman and more. Byrne created Alpha Flight, The Next Men and Danger Unlimited.
I followed John Byrne from the X-Men to each new series he picked up. His unique style was well suited to comics and he made characters look good. Byrne’s Wolverine is one of my favorites. When John Byrne started on the X-Men, Wolverine was unlike other Marvel/DC characters. His origin was a mystery and he wasn’t built like other heroes. Wolverine was short and stocky. He liked to smoke cigars, drink and scrap. Byrne’s Wolverine reminds me of a great period of comic collecting. I miss those days.
