Moore Sues Kirman Over The Walking Dead

The Hollywood Reporter posted the news that Tony Moore, the original artist and co-creator of the hit comic book series The Walking Dead has sued long-time [former?] friend, Robert KirkmanKirkman is, of course, the writer and co-creator of The Walking Dead.

According to The Hollywood Reporter

  • Moore claims that in 2005, Kirkman and his agents devised a scheme to fraudulently induce him to assign his copyright interests over to Kirkman’s company. Moore, who grew up with Kirkman and worked together on several projects, claims he signed a deal granting him 60 percent of “Comic Publishing Net Proceeds” in connection with Walking Dead and another project called Brit; 20 percent of “motion picture net proceeds” in connection with Walking Dead and Brit; and 50 percent of “motion picture net proceeds” from another project called Battle Pope.

The suit goes on to say that Moore has received little in the way of revenue from the hit comic and tv series and hasn’t seen any profit statements from Kirkman and/or his company.

This is a sad situation for all concerned.  Not only were Moore and Kirkman childhood friends, but they had also worked on many projects together up to The Walking Dead.  Hopefully, they will be able to come to a mutually satisfactory solution soon.

Comic Book Easter Eggs

The image above is an enlargement of a panel from Aliens/Predators: The Deadliest of the Species #5, by Chris Claremont [writer] and Eduardo Barreto [artist].  It’s a shot of a Predator’s trophy wall.  It’s obvious at this size that the trophies consist of an alien, Wolverine’s hand, Batman’s head, and the heads of other heroes.  Writers and artists regularly throw in little extras, or Easter Eggs, for observant readers.

I love stuff like this.

Lance Sawyer Got Carter

Lance Sawyer makes his third [and hopefully not last] appearance, this time with his take on Sly as Jack Carter from “Get Carter.” I’ve been a fan of Lance’s art for a while. Recently I had a chance to purchase a few sketches from him and I could not be happier in how they turned out!

If you’d like to see more of Lance’s art, you can right here.

More Fatale for All

If you’re already reading Fatale by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips then you might want to skip this post.  If you’re not reading Fatale, or it sold out before you could get your mits on a copy, then you’re in luck.  Fatale 1 and 2 have gone back to press, so there will be copies for you to jump on board to read the story of…

  • Nicolas Lash, a modern-day reporter who stumbles on a secret that leads him down the darkest path imaginable… to a seductive woman named Jo. She’s been on the run since 1935, entangled with a mobster who may be a monstrous immortal demon. As the stories of all the doomed men who have encountered Jo rise to the surface, Lash realizes that he too is caught in a deadly web. In addition to a riveting epic that blends noir and horror…

Tom Hodges Goes to Cop Land

This week we have Sly from Cop Land by Tom Hodges. I discovered Tom’s art through his DA site. I saw that Tom was going to be drawing live on UStream so I commissioned several sketches which will be posted in the coming weeks. Tom still draws regularly on UStream and it’s always a blast watching him sketch and interacting with the crowd.

Movies from an Alternate Universe

I love movies.  Classics like “Drive” starring James Dean, Eva Marie Saint, Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy, or Fritz Lang’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” or Bruce Lee in “The Matrix” or Blake Lewis’ “The Hangover” with Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Jack Lemmon and that classic Muhammad Ali cameo!

What?  Really?  You haven’t seen them?  You can if you check out Peter Stults Movies from an Alternate Universe.

Lance Sawyer makes his first appearance here with his sketch of Sly as Barney Ross from “The Expendables.” I’d been a fan of Lance’s art for a while. Recently I had a chance to purchase a few sketches from him and I could not be happier in how they turned out!

While I don’t think that anyone would argue that they weren’t great covers selected but what about…

Those covers just came to me quickly as I was putting together this post.  What other classic Marvel Age covers did we miss?

Jim, Charles, Junior, Charlie and Shawn

What a great time I had today.  I woke up early, but since I have the next couple of weeks off, I was able to take my time to leisurely get ready for my trip to Orlando to see my buddies, Jim Ivey [in the middle looking like a thin Santa] and Rob Smith, Jr. [on the left, looking like he’s starting a Santa beard himself].  We were joined by Charles Treadwell, who like Jim and Rob, is also an artist.

We met at Junior’s Diner and for nearly three hours we had breakfast and a lot of fun.  We shared stories from the past, caught up on what has been happening in our lives, and basically shot the bull.  The food was excellent and the company even better.  Since I drove Jim, it was my duty to get him back home, but not without a trip to Charlie’s Bakery for a box of double-chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies to go with the cigars and lottery tickets that I got him for Christmas.  When we got back to Jim’s it was just in time to see his old buddy, Roy, pull in.  Roy was carrying a bag of books and more for JimChristmas indeed came early for Mr. Ivey.

Shawn Surface had planned to attend the breakfast get-together, but obligations at work forced him to cancel.  Shawn told me to swing by his work if I could because he had a sketch he’d drawn for me.  So after dropping off Jim, I called Shawn, who said to come on by.  I did and things were slow enough that Shawn and I were able to hang out for a bit.  We talked about Shawn’s progress on Kuduman, a new series, Shawn plans to debut in 2012Shawn also gifted me with a very cool Stallone as Judge Dredd sketch that I’ll post in the coming weeks.

Finally it was time for me to get back on the road for my drive home.  I was smiling the whole way back.  I can’t remember the last time I had such a relaxed, free-flowing day with friends.

Mike Torrance Hits the Bullseye with Rambo

Mike Torrance aka The Krayola Kidd shows us his take on Sly as Rambo.

Recently Mike ran a “Black Friday” discount on his sketches and sketchcards. Since I’m a fan of Mike’s art, I naturally jumped on board for several. Mike, as he always does, went above and beyond. Next week I plan to share the present he included. It’s too cool.

Until then, you can see more of Mike’s art at The Daily Sketch with The Krayola Kidd and his Deviant Art site. Mike is available for commissions and his prices are very reasonable.
