BRYNMORE from Steve Niles & Daniel Worm is Coming!

Steve (30 Days of Night) Niles is reuniting with Daniel Worm for Brynmore.  The two had previously collaborated on October Faction.  This is one to keep an eye on.  Here’s the lowdown…

The Plot…

Price (Sizemore) is a retired hitman bored with his new life.  When a high-priced contract with a tight completion date falls into his lap, Price takes it.  The target is pretty, small-town librarian named Sarah (Alexander).  One night as Price is watching her, Sarah is attacked.  Price saves her.  One thing leads to another, and soon Price is falling for his mark.  As the deadline approaches Price will need to make a decision.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Price is based on Max Allan Collins’ hitman Quarry.  Collins has written several novels featuring this character.

Tom Sizemore was such a talented actor.

Ray McKinnon is billed as Ominous Figure and he is!  I wish that they had done more with him.  McKinnon is so good at being creepy.

Sprague Grayden has a small role.  I always like her film/tv appearances and this is no exception.

The Last Lullaby (2008) rates 3 of 5 stars.

RIP: Hal Dresner

Hal Dresner died yesterday from cancer.  He was 85.

Mr. Dresner was a writer and producer of television programs and feature films.  He was an uncredited writer on the Paul Newman classic, Cool Hand Luke.  One of the most famous lines in movie history, “What we have here is a failure to communicate” is attributed to Hal Dresner.

Some of Hal Dresner’s television work includes: Night Gallery (3 episodes); The Harvey Korman Show (creator & writer – 3 episodes); Husbands, Wives & Lovers (creator & writer – 10 episodes) and Poor Richard.

Some of Hal Dresner’s feature film work includes: .Cool Hand Luke (uncredited writer); The April Fools (screenplay); Catch 22 (screenplay); Sssssss (screenplay); The Eiger Sanction (screenplay) and Zorro: The Gay Blade (screenplay).

I probably first saw Hal Dresner’s work on a Night Gallery episode.  My favorite Hal Dresner screenplay is The Eiger Sanction.  It’s interesting to note that if he did nothing more than come up with the Cool Hand Luke line, “What we have here is a failure to communicate”, his place in movie history would be assured.

The Plot…

Elvis Mitchell, the writer and director of Is That Black Enough for You?!?, is a film scholar and film critic.  Here he explores the history and impact that African-American cinema had on all films and American culture.  There is an emphasis on the 1970s.  The film makes use of film clips as well as interviews with many of the artists who lived through this period.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

I greatly enjoyed Is That Black Enough for You?!?.  The two hours and 15 minutes flew by.  It was interesting to see the history of how African-Americans were portrayed in movies and the impact the late 60s and early 70s had when more black artists were able to take control of their films.  The interviews are the glue that holds it all together,  The film clips reminded me of many movies I’d seen in my youth and many more I’d like to see.

When the film was over, it left me wanting to dig deeper into the history of black artists such as Paul Robeson, Mantan Moreland (who sadly wasn’t mentioned), Oscar Micheaux and many others.  The topic is so huge it would be hard to cover in just one film and I’m sure that fed in to Mitchell’s decision to focus on the late 60s though the mid 70s.  I would love to see a streaming series that took a deeper look.  Elvis Mitchell, are you listening?

Tagline:  The only one who can stop a serial killer is the man who inspired him.

The Plot…

When a serial killer uses methods from Edgar Allan Poe stories to dispatch his victims, Detective Fields (Evans) reluctantly turns to Poe (Cusak) for help.  This only inspires the demented killer to up the ante by kidnapping Poe’s  fiancée and setting a timeline for her murder.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Edgar Allan Poe may have been an insufferable alcoholic, but to make an insufferable alcoholic the sympathetic hero of a movie is a tall order.  I did like how the ending aligns with real-life events in Poe’s life.

Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson are welcome additions in any movie and they shine in The Raven.

My favorite scene is the night of the party when a masked rider (the killer?) enters the ballroom on horseback.

Had the movie centered on Detective Fields a sequel would have been very cool since the final scenes seem to set it up.

The Raven (2012) earns 3 of 5 stars.

“Duel” (1971) directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Dennis Weaver / Z-View

Tagline: A duel is about to begin between a man, a truck, and an open road. Where a simple battle of wits is now a matter of life and death.

The Plot…

David Mann (Weaver), a salesman, is having a bad day.  He had an argument with his wife and she’s still ticked.  He has another stop to make before heading home and it’s a long drive both ways.  Mann’s day is about to get a lot worse when on a remote section of road an old tanker truck is creeping along.  Mann finally gets a chance to pass and does.  Almost immediately the tanker takes the lead back and then quickly slows down.  As Mann tries to pass again, the trucker tries to force him off the road. The trucker makes it clear he plans to kill Mann.  Miles out on a deserted road, what chance does Mann have?

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Duel was the tv movie that put Steven Spielberg on the map.  He had directed a some television episodes (Marcus Welby, Night Gallery, The Name of the Game, The Psychiatrist, Columbo and Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law) prior to helming Duel.  The response to Spielberg’s tv movie was so good that Spielberg was brought back to shoot additional scenes to bring the film to feature length.  Duel was given a release in Europe, Australia and even a limited US release.

Richard Matheson provides the screenplay based on his short story of the same name.  Matheson’s resume contains so many winners and Duel is on that list.

Dennis Weaver does an excellent job of acting especially since he’s often the only person on screen.  It’s interesting to note the number of other performers who actually appear in the film because it’s Weaver and the trucker from hell that we remember.

I watched Duel when it premiered.  I was spending the night at my grandparents.  My grandpa and I watched together. (We both liked it a lot.)

Duel earns 4 of 5 stars.

“Silo” – The Poster and Trailer are Here!

I’m not familiar with the Silo series by Hugh Howey (and why didn’t Howey get credit in the trailer when it said, “based on the best selling book series”).  The poster doesn’t sell the series to me, but that trailer has me wanting to see it!

RIP: Richard Belzer

Richard Belzer, the comedian, actor and author, died today.  He was 78.  No cause of death was given.

Richard Belzer began his entertainment career as a stand-up comedian.  He appeared in the low-budget film The Groove Tube in 1974.  He was also a featured comedian on the National Lampoon Radio Hour along with John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, and Harold Ramis.  Richard Belzer would go on to be the audience warm-up comedian for Saturday Night Live.  Mr. Belzer would go on to make three guest appearances on the show.  In addition to stand-up, Richard Belzer appeared in television and movies throughout his career.

Some Richard Belzer appearances in feature films include: The Groove Tube; Fame; Author! Author!; Night Shift; Scarface; Fletch Lives; The Bonfire of the Vanities; A Very Brady Sequel; Species II and The Comedian.

RIP: Raquel Welch

Raquel Welch, the model, actress, singer, business woman and international sex symbol died today after a brief illness.  Ms. Welch was 82.

Raquel Welch’s birth name was Jo Raquel Tejada.  A year after she graduated high school Jo Raquel married her high school sweetheart, James Welch. Mrs. Welch attended San Diego State College on a theater arts scholarship.  She began getting roles in local plays.  Then Raquel Welch got a job presenting weather at a local San Diego television station. Due to work and family obligations she dropped out of college.  Ms. Welch had two children with James Welch before they separated.  She would keep his name throughout her career.

In 1964, Raquel Welch began acting in film and television. She would work in both throughout her career.  Her role in One Million Years B.C. (1966) and the publicity photo of her in a fur bikini launched her to international stardom.  Raquel Welch became THE sex symbol of a generation (or three).  She posed for Playboy in 1979, but refused a total nude photo spread. (She also never appeared nude in any of her films.)

Ms. Welch appeared on Broadway in Woman of the Year (1981) and in Victor/Victoria (1997).  She had a one woman musical show in Las Vegas for several years.  In 1984, Raquel Welch released The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program as a book and video.  Later she would develop a wig, skincare and jewelry line of products.

My favorite Raquel Welch film is 100 Rifles.  She more than held her own with Burt Reynold and Jim Brown!
