On April 11, The Amateur, starring Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne, arrives only in theaters.

Charlie Heller (Malek) is a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA working out of a basement office at headquarters in Langley whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible, his intelligence serving as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and achieving his revenge.

The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Laurence Fishburne.

“The Amateur” is directed by James Hawes. The screenplay is by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli based on the novel by Robert Littell. The film is produced by Hutch Parker, p.g.a., Dan Wilson, p.g.a., Rami Malek, Joel B. Michaels, with JJ Hook serving as executive producer.

The Plot…

It’s discovered that rookie FBI agent Lee Harker (Monroe) has some psychic ability.  For that reason Harker is assigned to a small task force working to find the serial killer known as Longlegs.  For years, Longlegs has wiped out entire families by forcing the father to kill his children, wife and then himself.  Longlegs then leaves coded Satanic messages behind.

Shortly after Harker is assigned to the task force she receives a message from Longlegs.  Slowly Harker begins to realize she may have a connection to the killer.  As the clock ticks and the date of Longlegs’ next family massacre draws near, Harker works to discover Longlegs’ identity.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Although Nicolas Cage starred as the killer, Longlegs, writer/director Osgood Perkins requested that posters/trailers limit his use to promote the film so when he appears onscreen in the film it would be even more frightening.

Longlegs is the highest-grossing independent horror film since Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013).

Kudos to director Osgood Perkins.  He films each scene to at angles to increase tension.  Halls feel long and narrow.  Doors, windows and rooms in the background create concern.  There is always the feeling that something beyond the camera’s focus is about to occur.  Sometimes it does.  Creepy.

Each episode runs less than 30 minutes.

RIP: Gene Hackman

It was announced that Gene Hackman was found dead today.  No time or cause of death has been given.  Although no foul play was no suspected, an investigation is on-going.  Mr. Hackman was 95.

At the age of ten, Gene Hackman knew that he wanted to be an actor.  At sixteen he lied about his age and enlisted in the Marines.  After Mr. Hackman finished his enlistment he studied journalism and television production at the University of Illinois.  Gene Hackman left for California before graduating.  He joined the Pasadena Playhouse where he became friends with Dustin Hoffman.  Mr. Hackman moved to New York where at different times he shared an apartment with Dustin Hoffman or Robert Duvall.

Gene Hackman began to get small television roles.  During this time Mr. Hackman also appeared in several off-Broadway plays.  In 1963, he got his first Broadway role.  This opened the door to roles in feature films.  Mr. Hackman continued to work on Broadway, television guest spots and small film roles.  Gene Hackman’s breakout role came when he co-starred in Bonnie and Clyde.  This earned him his first (of five) Oscar nominations.  For the rest of his career Gene Hackman appeared in television and feature films.

Gene Hackman was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning two…

  • 1968 Nominee for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Bonnie and Clyde
  • 1971 Nominee for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for I Never Sang for My Father
  • 1972 Winner for Best Actor in a Leading Role for The French Connection
  • 1989 Nominee for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Mississippi Burning
  • 1993 Winner for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Unforgiven

I probably first saw Gene Hackman in Route 66 or The Invaders.  The first movie I remember seeing Mr. Hackman was in The Poseidon Adventure.  I loved him in that role!  It’s hard to pick a favorite Gene Hackman role because he was so good in so many films.  Some of favorites include Poseidon Adventure; Mississippi Burning; Unforgiven; The Quick and the Dead; Crimson Tide and Get Shorty.  What an amazing career Mr. Hackman had.

The Plot…

Levi Kane (Teller), a retired Marine Sniper is hired for a mysterious job that will last one year.  Kane is taken to an undisclosed location where he receives his orders.

His mission is to guard one side of a deep gorge.  Automated weapons line the rim of the gorge.  Mines are strung along the walls of the chasm.  Kane will be housed in a tower with equipment to oversea everything.  He will have no contact with the outside world except for monthly radio check ins with his employers.  A Russian operative is one the other side of the gorge with the same mission.  Kane is to have no contact with her.

When Kane asked who they are keeping out of the gorge, he is told, “You’re not keeping anyone out, you’re keeping the creatures that live in there from coming out.”

As the weeks pass, the Russian operative, Drasa (Taylor-Joy) begins communicating with Kane.  Short messages turn into conversations, long-distance chess matches and more.  A friendship develops.

When things go sidesways Kane and Drasa can depend only on each other to survive the hellish creatures from the gorge.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy have the chemistry needed to make their on-screen relationship work.

Sigourney Weaver was an excellent choice for the role of the corporate boss.

Kudos to writer Zack Dean for creating an action-horror-romance that is original and works.  Hats off also to director Scott Derrickson and the team that made the world in the gorge feel like something from one of Dante’s rings of Hell.

Don’t sleep on The Gorge.
