From the Mind of M. Night Shyamalan

Just the other night four of us were having a discussion about M. Night Shyamalan. All of us loved The Sixth Sense and Signs. After that things went south. Every other movie brought about mixed reactions… but none got the love of The Sixth Sense or Signs. Yet all of us held on to the hope that M. Night Shyamalan would return with a movie that would once again wow us.
Boris Karloff’s Thriller

If you’ve read the ZONE for any length of time, then you know about my love of monster movies, drive-in theaters, horror movie hosts like Sammy Terry, as well as scary [well at least they were when I was a kid] tv shows like The Twilight Zone, The Night Gallery, The Outer Limits, and The Invaders.
One show that fits into the horror genre but you’ve never heard me talk is Thriller. Hosted by the legendary, Boris Karloff, Thriller ran for 67 episodes from 1960 to 1962. From all accounts Thriller featured episodes that had some of the best scares and creepy stories that could be found anywhere. Stephen King called it,
“Probably the best horror series ever put on TV.”
Yet, for some reason it never showed up in reruns and only appeared with sporadic episodes on VHS and laser disc. That’s changed now that Thriller -The Complete Series is available on DVD with tons of extras.
If you’re like me, you’re hesitant to plunk down your hard-earned bucks without knowing more. Well, we’re in luck because at A Thriller a Day, one episode of the series is reviewed, you guessed it, each day. Even if I end up not purchasing the series, I’m going to enjoy reading about it. The two guys running the site have a good banter going, they’re refreshingly honest {they’ll call a clunker story, just that] and yet they also have an obvious love for the genre. If I was to make any suggestions to them it would be to change their rating system. Now they rate each episode from one to four Karloffs like this…

Perhaps it would be more horrific if they rated the episodes like this…

Why Machete Don’t Text

Did you catch the video interview with Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo that ran at JoBlo.com? If you did you know how Machete originated, why Steven Seagal had to be the guy to fight Machete, and more. If you missed the interview, no worries. You can still see it here.
Gotta Dance!

Sometimes ya just gotta dance. Especially if you’ve just watched a well-edited clip of movie scenes that glorify dance. I’m told that there are over 40 movies represented, but I didn’t count them so I can’t be sure. I did take note of a dancer that appeared in four different movies in dancing roles. Can you name the actor and the films that appear in this clip?
Famous GPS Voices

My buddy, John Beatty, was the first person I knew to have a GPS for his car. He took me for a test drive and showed me how the system worked. I thought it was the coolest device going and loved how it “spoke” real time, turn-by-turn directions. John and I got to talking about how wicked it would be if famous voices were giving the directions. Wouldn’t it be wild to hear John Wayne, Bugs Bunny, Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, Elmer Fudd, Droopy or any of a gazillion other celebs helping you find your destination?
As for me, I’m still holding out for the day when I’m driving and hear from my GPS, “Yo! Turn left at the next light” and then when I make the turn, we’ll hear, “Yo! Adrian! He did it!”
Cully Sees a Whole Lot of Red

Recently Cully Hamner posted the cover above that he did as one of the four Red movie prequel comics. While I’m happy [especially for Cully] that Red was turned into a movie and that it has Bruce Willis [Bruce Willis!] in the title role; I was really hoping that the film would be a faithful adaptation of the comic series. Instead, we’re going to get a movie inspired by the comic series. And while the comic was more action/adventure, the film looks to be action/comedy with an emphasis on the comedy.
The movie may work. But work or not, it won’t change how the Red graphic novel rocks.
Andrew Charipar’s Sly from Spy Kids 3D

I wasn’t expecting to see Andrew Charipar at this year’s Heroes Con. In fact, he almost didn’t make it due to car problems. Thankfully, he did and worked up a couple of new Stallone sketches for me. This is, Sly as one of the many characters he played in Spy Kids 3D. More of Andrew’s art can be seen at his blog and DA site.
Jesus Antonio’s Rambo

Jesus Antonio is an artist who lives in Mexico. Jesus posts on quite a few sites and is always positive and complimentary of the artwork of others and humble about his own. When I had the opportunity to get a few Stallone sketches and a sketchbook from Jesus, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. You can see more of Jesus’ art here!
Expendables, Too?

I think that this may be my favorite poster for The Expendables. If you like it, you might want to check out the King-of-the-Box-Office size version over at IMPAwards.
Because The Expendables is doing so well at the box office and continues to track above expectations, talk of a sequel is a quickly moving forward. So it got me thinking…
“Who would I want to see in The Expendables 2?”
Without a doubt I’d like to see roles [even cameos] for…
- Ron Perlman – He may have been born to play Hellboy, but he’s been groomed to be an Expendable
- Danny “Machette” Trejo – he could be great playing either an Expendable or foe
- Chuck Norris – most likely in a cameo a la Arnold’s
- David Morse – an under-rated actor who never disappoints
- Ray Stevenson – yep, the mug from Punisher: War Zone
Those are my top choices… others I considered included: Kurt Russell, William Smith, Clancy Brown, William Forsythe…
Stallone’s Surprising Interview

Something cool and unexpected happened during this interview with Sylvester Stallone. Well played, marketing department!
Andrew Charipar is Expendable

I wasn’t expecting to see Andrew Charipar at this year’s Heroes Con. In fact, he almost didn’t make it due to car problems. Thankfully, he did and worked up a couple of new Stallone sketches for me. This is, of course, Sly as Barney Ross from The Expendables. I’ll post the other sketch in a few weeks. Until then we have Andrew’s blog and his DA site to hold us over.
Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer Returns!

When Dave Stevens passed away last year, many thought that we’d never see another new story featuring his creation The Rocketeer. IDW has just announced that they will publish a four issue mini-series featuring Stevens’ Rocketeer with new stories and art by some of the most talented people in the industry. Folks like…
…Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday, Darwyn Cooke, Michael Golden, Gene Ha, Michael Kaluta, Garry Leach, Bruce Timm, Bill Willingham, and… pin-ups by Geoff Darrow, Art Adams, Jeff Campbell, Mike Mignola and others…

James Mason Gets Carter

I met James Mason a few years ago at an OrlandoCon. I knew right away I’d want to get a piece from him for my Stallone art collection. James worked up this take on Sly as Jack Carter. Recently James held a contest on his site and I was one of the lucky winners. My prize — James colored the piece you see posted today.
Big thanks to James!!
