The Plot…

Forty years have passed since the events in 1883.  Jacob (Ford) and Cara Dutton (Mirren) raised their nephews John and Spencer Dutton to adulthood.  Along the way they built one of the largest cattle ranches in Montana.

1923 follows three main storylines:

  • John, Cara as well as family and friends work the Dutton ranch.  John Dutton is trying to hold the ranch together.  Cattle prices are down. It is going to be a hard winter.  The bank won’t loan enough money to buy hay to feed the heard.  Then sheepherders begin encroaching the Dutton Land.  Behind the scenes rich landowner Donald Whitfield (Dalton) has plans to steal the Dutton spread.  When the Duttons go to war with the sheepherders, people on both sides are killed.  Things are escalating.   Cara writes Spencer and says he is needed at home.
  • Spencer Dutton (Sklenar) fought in World War I and then traveled the world as a big game hunter.  While in Africa he meets Alexandra.  She’s British and engaged to be married to a man she doesn’t love.  When Spencer leaves for his next assignment, Alexandra leaves with him.  They will have several adventures and another run-in with Alexandra’s ex before they receive the letter to come back to the ranch.
  • Teonna Rainwater (Nieves) is a young Native American suffering abuse at an Indian Boarding School run by the Catholic church. Teonna is headstrong and has several confrontations with the sister and priest running the school.  Things continue to go downhill with Teonna being beaten and abused until she can take it no more.  She kills two of the abusive sisters and goes on the run.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Each storyline is compelling and features interesting characters that you love or hate.  It’s so well written, acted and directed that when the storyline shifts from one to the next, you don’t mind.  It will be interesting to see how everything comes together.  Taylor Sheridan has another winner.

1923 is perfectly cast from the starring roles to the smallest guest appearances.  The direction, editing and music jell to create one of the best shows on television.  Bring on season 2.

1923: Season 1 (2023) earns 5 of 5 stars.

RIP: Michael Lerner

Michael Lerner  died on April 8, 2023.  Mr. Lerner was 81.

Michael Lerner knew from an early age that he wanted to be an actor.  While in college he performed in several plays.  After his graduation from Brooklyn College, Michael Lerner received a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley. There he earned a master’s degree.  Upon graduation he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study theater in London.  While in London, Michael Lerner became friends with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.  He even appeared in one of Ono’s short experimental films.

In 1968, Michael Lerner returned to California.  He began appearing in local stage productions.  The following year he began getting guest spots on television shows.  In 1970, he appeared in the feature film Alex in Wonderland.  For the remainder of his career Michael Lerner would act on stage, television, feature films and even radio. Mr. Lerner was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his role in Barton Fink (1991).

Some of Michael Lerner’s television appearances include: Dr. Kildare; The Brady Bunch; The Doris Day Show (2 episodes); The Young Lawyers; That Girl; Thief; Marriage Year One; Banacek; The Bold Ones: The New Doctors (2 episodes); Ironside (2 episodes); Night Gallery; The Streets of San Francisco; The Bob Newhart Show; Emergency; Love American Style; MASH; The Odd Couple; The Missiles of October; Sarah T. – Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic; Starsky and Hutch (2 episodes); Rhoda; Harry O; Police Woman; The Rockford Files (4 episodes); Ruby & Oswald; Kojak; Vegas; Wonder Woman; Barnaby Jones; Hart to Hart (2 episodes); MacGyver; The A-Team; Hill Street Blues (4 episodes); Amazing Stories; The Equalizer; Melba (4 episodes); Tales from the Crypt; Courthouse (11 episodes); Clueless (18 episodes); Godzilla: The Series (3 episodes); Third Watch; Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2 episodes); Entourage; Saving Grace; The Good Wife and Glee (5 episodes).

I don’t remember when I first saw Michael Lerner.  He appeared in several shows that I regularly watched as a kid.  Michael Lerner always brought something special to the roles he played.  My favorite is probably his Academy Award nominated performance in Barton Fink.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Michael Lerner’s family, friends and fans.

RIP: Bill Butler

Wilmer Cable Butler aka Bill Butler died yesterday at the age of 101, just two days short of his 102nd birthday.

Mr. Butler graduated with a degree in engineering from the University of Iowa.  He began his professional career as an engineer at a Gary, Indiana radio station.  He moved to Chicago to help design and build ABC television affiliate stations.  Mr. Butler then moved to WGN-TV where he worked live camera reports for local shows and commercials.

It was at WGN where Bill Butler met director William Friedkin.  Friedkin was prepping a documentary. He asked Mr. Butler to serve as his cinematographer.  The documentary was The People vs. Paul Crump, about a death row inmate.  The documentary assisted in getting Crump exonerated.  It was also Bill Butler’s first professional film credit.  Mr. Butler would go on to become one of the most requested and admired cinematographers in the industry.

Some of Bill Bulter’s feature films include: Fearless Frank; The Rain People; Drive, He Said; The Return of Count Yorga; Hickey & Boggs; The Conversation; Jaws; Lipstick; The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings; Demon Seed; Capricorn One; Damien: Omen II; Grease; Uncle Joe Shannon; Ice Castles; Rocky II; Can’t Stop the Music; The Night’s the Lights Went Out in Georgia; Stripes; Rocky III; Rocky IV;  Biloxi Blues; Graffiti Bridge; Hot Shots!; Sniper; Cop & ½; Beethoven’s 2nd; Anaconda and Frailty.

Some of Bill Butler’s television projects include: The People vs. Paul Crump; Something Evil; Circle of Fear (5 episodes); Savage; The Execution of Private Slovik; Raid on Entebbe; The Thorn Birds (4 episodes); A Streetcar Named Desire and  A Walton Wedding.

Bill Butler is best known for his work with Steven Spielberg on Jaws.  They had worked together previously on two television movies, Something Evil and Savage.  I first saw Bill Butler’s work on The Execution of Private Slovik, a television movie starring Martin Sheen.  It felt like I was watching a feature film and much of the credit for that goes to Mr. Butler.

I loved how throughout his career Bill Butler could move from low-budget genre films to high budget star vehicles.  He was at home with gritty dramas as movies geared to kids.  He worked on so many films that I love: Jaws; Capricorn One; Rocky 2, 3 &4 and Frailty to name a few.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bill Butler’s family, friends and fans.

I probably first saw Sharon Acker in The Wild, Wild West.  She would go on to appear in many of the shows I tuned in to weekly to see.  What an amazing career she had.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sharon Acker’s family, friends and fans.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

It’s great to see Elba return to the character that made him famous.  I’d love to see more Luther movies.  There was talk that Elba would make a great 007.  The ending of Luther: Fallen Sun makes that unnecessary.

Kudos to Jamie Payne for his direction.  I look forward to seeing what Payne does next.

Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023) rates 4 of 5 stars.

What should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey into buried family secrets, and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong.

“The Bounty Man” (1972) starring Clint Walker & Margot Kidder / Z-View

The Bounty Man (1972)

Director:  John Llewellyn Moxey

Writer:  Jim Byrnes

Stars: Clint Walker, Richard Basehart, John Ericson, Margot Kidder, Gene Evans, Arthur Hunnicutt, Rex Holman, Glenn R. Wilder, Hal Needham and Rita Conde.

Tagline: When the man-hunter becomes the hunted.

The Plot…

Kinkaid (Walker) is a bounty hunter that always gets his man.  He’s driven and goes to any lengths, against any odds to finish what he starts.  When Kinkaid learns that Billy Riddle (Ericson) has a $5,000 bounty on his head, Riddle’s days as a free man are numbered.  Riddle is holed up in a small town that’s home to many criminals.  To make matters worse, Kinkaid has no idea that  Angus Keough (Basehart) and his small band of cutthroats have plans to kidnap Riddle once Kinkaid bags him.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

The Bounty Man was made for television and feels like it.  Clint Walker and a young, Margot Kidder are the main reasons to check this one out.  Richard Basehart feels so out of place here.  It could be because I’m used to him in his role on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

I wish I liked The Bounty Man better.  If you’re a Clint Walker fan, your time would be better spent picking any two episodes of Cheyenne.

The Bounty Man (1972) rates 2 of 5 stars.

THE PHANTOM – The Man Who Cannot Die!

Bottleneck Gallery posted The Phantom print above as well as another (with variants of both) by Henrik Sahlstrom.  Seeing these posters took me back to my childhood.  For a brief time I was a fan of The Phantom.  He appeared in a comic strip in my local newspaper (Terre Haute Tribune-Star).

The Phantom was created by Lee Falk.  The first Phantom newspaper strip appeared on February 17, 1936.  The Phantom wore the purple costume you see in the art by Sahlstrom. In the series, set in the fictional country of Bangalla, Africa, Christopher Walker was the first Phantom who took on the hero identity when his father was killed by pirates.  Walker passed the identity down to his son and so it went with each new generation.  The Phantom became known as “The Ghost Who Walks” and “The Man Who Cannot Die”.  Although he has no super powers, the Phantom is smart and strong.  He lives in a cave that looks like a skull with his pet wolf, Devil.

Over the years, The Phantom has been adapted from the newspaper strips to comic books, movie serials, animated series, a live-action series and a feature film!  At it’s peak The Phantom newspaper strip reportedly had an audience of over 100 million readers daily.  Even more amazing is the fact that the strip is still being published today! The Phantom is truly the man who cannot die!

Tagline: Save who you can save.

The Plot…

2023.  Twenty years ago a pandemic caused by a bizarre easily transmitted fungal infection turned most of the world’s population into mindless mutant killing machines. Society collapsed.

Joel (Pascal) currently lives in a city under military rule.  Joel and his partner Tess (Torv) plan to escape the quarantine zone and head into the wilderness.  Joel’s brother is there somewhere with a group of freedom fighters.  As Joel and Tess make plans for their escape they encounter Marlene (Dandridge).  She can provide them with needed equipment if they will take Ellie (Ramsey) with them.  Ellie is an orphaned fourteen year old with a lot of attitude… and she just may be the key to a cure.

Joel, Tess and Ellie head out.  They will quickly discover the infected aren’t the worst thing they will have to deal with.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

The Last of Us is based on the popular video game of the same name.  I’ve never played it and didn’t know the story ahead of seeing the show.

Every episode contains twists, but none as brutal as in the first episode.  It should have been obvious looking at the posters, but I had avoided everything I could in regard to press for the show.  I was gobsmacked by how much I came to care for a character I had never seen before.

It’s interesting how time is played with throughout the series.  The first episode features a scene on a talk show that takes places 30 to 40 years before the start of the pandemic.  A scientist is talking about the dangers to humans that fungi could present with minor changes to the environment.  That was clever.  Each episode features flashbacks to strengthen the present story.

The characters are well cast, well written and well played. Of course not enough can be said about Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.  They are supported by an amazing supporting cast. Standouts include Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Storm Reid, Nick Offerman, Graham Greene and  Elaine Miles.  Some of these characters appear in just one episode or a few scenes in one episode.  The attention to detail in getting the right person in each role, no matter how small pays off.

Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) are the heart and soul of the series.  Yet sometimes the people they meet take center stage. In episode three, titled Long, Long Time, Joel and Ellie become supporting characters, but this chapter remains essential viewing to The Last Of Us story.  Long, Long Time ranks with the best single episode of any continuing drama ever.  With each new outing we learn more about Joel, Ellie and the world they live in.  I wouldn’t want that reality, but I sure love visiting it.

The Last of Us is making the right choices in every department.  I look forward to season two.

The Last of Us: Season 1 (2023) earns 5 of 5 stars.
