Trick or Treat?

Ah, Halloween is here.

And since I have a TON of work to complete before the Trick or Treaters begin to arrive… Let me leave you ZONErs with just this little treat.

Click HERE and see how many differences you can find in the pictures.

You may be shocked at the answer!

Dr. Jekyll has Two Secrets

In the spirit of Halloween, I’ve been watching [and enjoying] quite a few horror movies lately. As most of you know, I’m a big fan of the genre especially the classic monstersWolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Until this week I was never a fan of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde [in any of the many movie versions]. I decided to watch the 1931 film starring Frederich March and Miriam Hopkins. I know I had seen it before when I was a kid and it didn’t impress me. Watching it again the other night was like seeing it for the first time.

Fredric March won a Best Actor Oscar for his role[s]. Miriam Hopkins is just right as the saucy barmaid who adds fuel to March’s fire. The special effects were excellent.

What suprised me most was the movie used Jekyll’s sexual frustration as the focal point of the duality of man’s battle with good vs evil. For a film made in the 30’s it was pretty surprising.

At any rate, if you’re looking for a good movie for Halloween, give the 1931 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a view. You might discover that there’s more to both Dr. Jekyll and the movie than appears at first glance!

“Dr, Jekyll and Mr. Hide” [1931] rates a B

White Noise

Some people believe that the dead can speak to us and their voices and images are sometimes captured in pictures and recordings.

There’s even an organization dedicated to the study of the phenomena. And whether you believe it’s possible or not, I’ll bet that you spend a bit more time than expected if you visit their site.

I always try to keep an open mind to things and love the idea that it may be true. But true or not, the concept does make a great springboard for a movie.

Wachowski Brothers’ Next Project

The Wachowski brothers, the guys who created The Matrix, are back and I’ll bet their next project will surprise you.

It’s a comic series called Doc Frankenstein [created by Geof Darrow and Steve Scroce]!

The Wachoski brothers will write and Steve Scroce will draw the bi-monthly series which begins in November from Burlyman Entertainment.

The tagline says: Resurrected from the dead! He is the MESSIAH OF SCIENCE who has returned to Save Our World from the MONSTERS currently running it!

I’m going to pre-order Doc Frankenstein through my local comic dealer and you should too if you want to be sure to get a copy.

"One Busy Horror Writing Machine"

Steve Niles is one of my favorite writers.

Niles writes screenplays, novels and comic books. If that sounds like a lot of writing, it is.

But so far I’ve enjoyed everything that Niles has written [especially the Cal McDonald novels].

Steve‘s got a lot more stuff coming out in the next year.

Who knows maybe you’ll become a fan too!

Pleasant Nightmares!

Sammy Terry returns!

If you grew up anywhere in the midwest from the early 60’s to the mid 80’s you probably made a habit of tuning in on Friday [and later Saturday] nights to watch Sammy Terry’s Nightmare Theater. Sammy would introduce horror movies and return with commentary after each commercial break. Sammy was one of the first “horror hosts” and definitely had one of the longest running shows.

If you grew up watching Sammy and would love to see him again, or if you never had the chance and want to see what he was all about…

Sammy will have his first official Sammy Terry Live Webcast will be on Friday, July 30th from 9:00 pm to 9:15 pm. The Sammy Terry chat will start at 9:15 pm and run to 10:00 pm. I plan to tune in, and if you love horror movie, hope that you can make it as well.

Until then… I wish you all… “Pleasant Nightmares.”

Third Time a Charm?

Two out of three ain’t bad… and that’s just what I’m hoping for.

See, I didn’t care for Blade, but really, really liked Blade 2. Blade 3 aka Blade Trinity will be released later this year and I’m hoping that it will be as fun as Blade 2.

Wesley Snipes is back and that’s a plus. This time around they’ve added two new supporting character’s. Abigail and Hannibal King. Both of them look pretty interesting and I’m sure that the studio is thinking spin-off .

Days Turn to Weeks

It looks like there may be a sequel to 28 days later which was one of my favorite movies of 2002.

Tentatively titled 28 weeks later, it probably won’t be directed by Danny Boyle [who helmed the original] or written by Alex Garland [who wrote the original… although both may return as producers.

I’m a big fan of the original film so I’d be interested in seeing what happens next.

A Lot About Salem’s Lot

Salem’s Lot is one of my favorite Stephen King books.

It’s probably second only to King‘s The Stand. Stephen King has written some of the scariest and without a doubt most popular horror fiction ever. The sad thing is, as good as his books have been, most of the movies made from them have been mediocre at best.

That’s why I was pretty excited when TNT announced that there would be a new Salem’s Lot mini-series. This would be the second time that Salem’s Lot would be turned into a tv production. The first time was in the late 70’s and starred David Soul and James Mason. And it was actually pretty good.

When the cast [Rob Lowe, Rutgar Hauer, Donald Sutherland and James Cromwell] for the re-make was announced things continues to look rosy. Then publicity stills began to be released and they looked pretty cool.

Things were all seeming to come together positively well… until I read Quint’s review today.

But you know me… I’ll still tune in and check it out for myself. Hopefully I’ll like it better than Quint, but if not I can still go back and re-read the novel.

AVP: Starting to Believe

I wasn’t on board with Alien vs Predator when I first heard about it.

It sounded pretty lame to me. Sort of like two little kids arguing about who would win between Hulk and SupermanRocky and RamboJason and Freddy

But I’ve got to admit, the more I see about Alien vs Predator, the cooler I think it might be. There’s a trailer on-line and it’s helping to make a believer out of me.

Watch it and maybe it’ll make one out of you.

Exorcist: The Beginning – Trio

Producers of Exorcist: The Beginning are going to release two completely different versions of the horror prequel on DVD! That’s right, both the original version which was directed by Paul Shrader as well as the totally reshot version by Renny Harlin which will be released to theaters later this summer will be available when the dvd is released.

The production company didn’t care at all for the footage turned in by original director Paul Schrader who had created “a creepy psychological thriller sans the gore.” So Renny Harlin was brought in to reshoot the entire movie. Harlin recast roles and went to work. Harlin‘s version will hit big screens later this year.

The cool thing is that fans will get to see both versions once the dvd is released. And I’ll be willing to bet that a good portion of fans will prefer the version that was never released to theaters!

Double the Zombie Pleasure…

Two new zombie movies are starting to get some good buzz and may be worth a look.

The first is called Shaun of the Dead [gotta love that title!] which is a comedy from the UK. It looks like a lot of fun!

The second is called Undead. Man, I’m still not sure what to make of this one. I watched the trailer… and I’m still not sure what to make of this one…

Moore Moves On, Adlard Moves In

“Is it going to be as good?”

My current favorite regularly published comic is The Walking Dead. Writer, Robert Kirkman, and artist Tony Moore have created a great comic. Each issue has been more than worth the price of admission and the series continues to get better and better.

Sadly, Tony has decided to move on after issue six.

The good news is that Charlie Adlard [X-Files, White Death, Astronauts In Trouble] is taking over the art chores and looks to be an excellent choice.

Still, until we see the issue, one has to wonder…
