Steve Niles’ Photo Blog

Steve Niles at one time had a photo blog where he shared photos from his collection.  Some were behind-the-scenes pictures like the one above of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, still in costume, on a break from filming the original Star Trek tv series to check out the latest issue of Mad magazine.

Here’s Frankenstein taking a little “me time” for a smoke and a cup of joe.

And here we have one of the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz.  If you’ve read this far, my guess is you’ll dig Steve’s photos.

Jeff Johnson Knows the Cure

The piece above was drawn by Jeff Johnson at last year’s Heroes Con. Jeff is one of the founding fathers of Drink and Draw [along with Rev. Dave Johnson and Dan Panosian]. When I asked him to autograph my hardcover Drink and Draw, Volume 2, I also asked Jeff about doing a Stallone piece for my collection. Jeff was up for it and chose Cobra. He then proceeded to kill it with this sketch.

Hopefully, Jeff will be up for another Stallone piece in the future.

Mail Order Mysteries Revealed

When I was a kid I was always intrigued by the mail order items available in comic books.  Who didn’t think about ordering the X-Ray Specs, the footlocker full of soldiers, or the Ventrillo Voice-Thrower?  After seeing this trailer for Mail-Order Mysteries Revealed, I’m glad that I didn’t… although the lifesize submarine might have been fun… for the 30 minutes or so until it fell apart.

Ryan Cody Sets His Sites on Barney Ross

This week Ryan Cody is back with Sly from The Expendables.

I usually try to space out the work of the artists that I spotlight, but Ryan is running such an unbelievable sale [where you get a free sketch with every purchase. That’s right. Buy Volume 1 of his sketchbook for five bucks and get a free sketch. Same if you buy Volume 2 or the Icarus Convention Issue] that I want to help him promote it.

So far I’ve ordered both sketchbooks [accidentally ordered Volume 1 twice] and 2 copies of the Icarus convention issue. If you want to see more of his art then check out Ryan’s blog and his DA site.

Krayola Kidd Treats Us to a Sly Pun

Mike Torrance aka The Krayola Kidd is back and he brought Sly dressed as The Punisher.

You can see more of Mike’s art at The Daily Sketch with The Krayola Kidd and his Deviant Art site. Mike is available for commissions and his prices are very reasonable. You’re also going to be happy to know that once a month Mike has a contest for someone to win a free sketchcard! That is how I came to own this cool piece. I won the contest [Halloween Edition] and told Mike to pick a Sly character. He chose Sly as the Punisher and I salute him!

Ryan Cody & a Lord of Flatbush

Ryan Cody is back with Sly from Lords of Flatbush.

Ryan is running an unbelievable sale where you get a free sketch with every purchase. That’s right. Buy Volume 1 of his sketchbook for five bucks and get a free sketch. Same if you buy Volume 2 or the Icarus Convention Issue.

I jumped on board for a sketchbook [accidentally ordered Volume 1 which I already had] and the Icarus convention issue [the sketch that came with it will be posted in the coming weeks]. Now I’m going back for Volume 2 and another Stallone sketch. Until then check out Ryan’s blog and his DA site.

The Punisher in Name Only

Deadline Hollywood announced today that FOX has a commitment for a tv series based on the popular Marvel comic book character The Punisher.   According to the article…

  • The Punisher is described as an hour-long procedural with a Marvel signature and a new take on one of the comic book giant’s iconic characters, Frank Castle, a rising star detective with the New York Police Department who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher, seeking justice for those the system has failed.

Let me break it to you gently, that ain’t The Punisher.  A “rising star detective” who moonlights as The Punisher?  Sheesh.   Why in the world are they calling the series The Punisher?  Why take one of comics’ most “iconic characters” and change what made him iconic?
