I’m a Guy Pearce and Keith David fan so I am looking forward to The 7th Day.  The fact that Keith didn’t make the poster doesn’t bode well for him living to the end of the film.  As to the poster it is okay.  I did like the trailer.  If I watch The 7th Day, I know that I’ll be doing it without my wife.  She hates exorcism movies.

A renowned exorcist who teams up with a rookie priest for his first day of training. As they plunge deeper into hell on earth, the lines between good and evil blur, and their own demons emerge.

Meet Robin Recht and His Conan!

The Conan drawing above was created by Robin Recht.  Recht’s art is new to me and after seeing the drawing above I searched for more information on and art by Recht.

Robin Recht is a French artist.  He studied in Paris, and has created artwork for comics and role-playing games.  From what I’ve gathered most of his comic work is published overseas.  I would definitely love to see English translations of his comic work.

The Top 10 All-Time Most Memorable Movie Songs (and One That Should Have Made the List)!

Jonathan Blaauw at Listverse recently posted his choices for the Top 10 Memorable Movie Songs.  His list is a good one.  I was happy to see that Eye of the Tiger by Survivor for Rocky III came in at the number one spot.  Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees for Saturday Night Fever came in at #9.  I would have put Stayin’ Alive in the top spot, but who am I to quibble.  The songs in Blaauw’s Top Ten were all excellent choices.

If I was making the list however, I would have found a place for Queen’s Who Wants to Live Forever from the movie  Highlander.  I think that Who Wants to Live Forever is not only a cool song, but perfectly fit the film.  There are many other songs that I also might have picked for my top ten but watch the video below and tell me if you don’t agree, Who Wants to Live Forever is one of the great movie songs of all time.

The video below on How Tom Cruise Pulled Off All Those Crazy Stunts is worth a watch.  Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but you have to admit that no one else in the movie business takes it to the limits that Cruise does almost every time out.  He must truly be an adrenaline junkie.

Tom Cruise is perhaps most famous for doing almost all of his own stunts, which have intensified throughout his career. In the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, he climbed part of a 2,000-foot cliff in “Mission: Impossible 2” and then climbed 1,700 feet up the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, in “Ghost Protocol.” In “Rogue Nation,” Cruise did not one, but two dangerous stunts. First, he hung off the side of a plane that took him up 1,000 feet in the air. He then had to hold his breath underwater for about six minutes, a stunt that required military-style preparation. In “Fallout,” he jumped 25,000 feet out of a plane and filmed a helicopter stunt that required him to get 2,000 hours of training and learn how to do a 360-degree corkscrew dive. Outside the “Mission” franchise, he filmed a scene on a real zero-gravity plane instead of a soundstage in “The Mummy” and learned how to do action in an 85-pound suit in “Edge of Tomorrow.” He is soon set to return to one of his most iconic roles in “Top Gun: Maverick.“

The “Army of the Dead” Trailer is Here (and so are Craig’s thoughts on it)

Today the Army of the Dead trailer dropped.  I like Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, 300 and Watchmen.  So I’m looking forward to seeing what Snyder will do with Army of the Dead.  The story holds a lot of potential and Dave Bautista will make a good lead.  My only concerns are that it doesn’t get silly.  I like some humor in my horror, but the focus needs to be on the scary stuff.  Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead had the right balance, I hope that Army of the Dead does as well.

The Bee Gees’ Record-Breaking Trivia!

Me-TV posted There’s no jive talkin’ in these 12 fascinating facts about the Bee Gees. As an unabashed Bee Gees fan, I’m happy to see it.

Unfortunately I don’t think enough people give the Bee Gees enough credit for their impact on music and culture.  Although they were making and releasing great music in the 60s, they peaked in the 70s and then continued to write and produce hits well after.  I was (and am) a Bee Gees fan.  I still love their music — it brings back great memories and makes me smile.  Before you click over, here are my three favorite facts from the Me-TV post…

  • They released eight songs in 1978 that reached number one.  (Their #1 hits were “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever” and “Too Much Heaven.” They wrote and produced the hits “(Love Is) Thicker Than Water” and “Shadow Dancing,” for their little brother, Andy Gibb.  That year they also are credited for Frankie Valli’s “Grease” and Yvonne Elliman’s “If I Can’t Have You.” – Craig)
  • In 1978, they accounted for 2% of the entire record industry.  (Please see above! If the Bee Gees had done nothing else before or after 1978, their success in that one year would have put them in the record books.- Craig)

Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan is another documentary coming to Netflix.  It is also another documentary that I plan to watch.

As a brutal civil war rages across 16th century Japan, powerful samurai warriors rise up to crush their rivals and become the first leader in almost a century to reunite the nation and rule all of Japan. Many will rise, most will fall, and one will build a dynasty that will stand for over two centuries.

RIP: Peter S. Davis

Peter S. Davis, best known as the producer of the Highlander movie, television and video game franchise died on February 21st.  Mr. Davis was 79.

Peter S. Davis was CEO and President of Davis-Panzer Productions (DPP) and Davis Merchandising.  He was a former lawyer on Wall Street as well as an  entrepreneur who owned several business’ outside of movie-making.  Davis began his Hollywood career in 1976 as an Executive Producer of The Death Collector which featured Joe Pesci in a co-starring role.  Davis followed that up as Executive Producer of the movie Stunts starring Robert Forester and Ray Sharkey.  Peter Davis was producer of Sam Peckinpah’s last film (The Osterman Weekend) as well as one of Brad Pitt’s first films (Cutting Class), but it is the Highlander series where Davis made his biggest and best contribution.

Davis pushed to get Highlander to the big screen.  He is also credited for getting Sean Connery in the co-starring role that gave the film gravitas.  The success of Highlander created a franchise that included a sequel, an animated series, a television series, tv movies and video games.

The original Highlander film is one of my all-time favorite films.  Everything from the screenplay to the acting, direction and soundtrack/score came together.  Although I wasn’t a fan of the sequel and didn’t get into the other Highlander ventures, I am such a fan of the original Highlander film, if that was the only contribution that Peter S. Davis made in his career, it would be worth noting here.

The Rambo Franchise’s 5 Best Characters (& 5 Best Action Sequences) – & 1 Scene that Should Have Made the List!

Ben Sherlock at ScreenRant posted The Rambo Franchise’s 5 Best Characters (& 5 Best Action Sequences).  His list is a good one. Before you click over let me show you a clip of an action scene that I think should have been included in Sherlock’s list.  It is the scene with the river pirates from Rambo.

I love how the tension builds as Rambo and crew move past the pirates’ dock. Just when it looks like they may have escaped trouble, you hear the pirates’ boat start up. Then they are hit with an intensely bright spotlight and machine gun fire churns the water around them.  As Rambo tries to negotiate with the pirate leader, Rambo’s eyes move to each of the pirates to see what weapons they possess and their level of danger.  Rambo is already determining the order that he will have to take them out should it come to that… and it does.

Be aware before watching the video it contains some profanity and violence.

“Murder Among Mormons” – The Trailer is Here!

Murder Among Mormons looks to be another interesting documentary on Netflix.  I plan to tune in.

Murder Among the Mormons is the first comprehensive look at one of the most shocking crimes to have ever taken place among the Mormon community and the criminal mastermind behind it all. The three-part documentary series directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and Tyler Measom (An Honest Liar), examines a trio of bombings in 1985 that killed two people and shocked Salt Lake City. The murders send further shockwaves through the community when a trove of early Mormon letters and diaries are found destroyed in the vehicle of the third victim, a renowned collector of rare documents, including the infamous White Salamander Letter — an artifact whose contents threatened to shake the very foundations of Mormonism. As he fights for his life, investigators race to uncover the truth.

“The Penthouse” Poster and Trailer are Here!

I like both the poster and trailer for The Penthouse.  Michael Pare and Nicholas Turturro may have a winner.  This looks like a pretty good film.

This dark, gripping thriller shows that evil lurks where we least expect it. In sunny Carolina Beach, Peter and Amanda’s new penthouse condo has a perfect view of the marina. One day they notice a couple bickering aboard a docked sailboat. Amanda befriends frightened Tess, but soon afterwards Tess vanishes without a trace. After Peter confronts her boyfriend Charles (Michael Paré, GONE), Charles vows to make the nosy couple’s life a living hell, stopping at nothing until he gets revenge.

The Dichotomy Philosophy Quiz

I recently took a Dichotomy Philosophy quiz and my results are posted above.  You can see an easier to read version by clicking on the photo.  

  • My rating for Spiritualism (69.2%) was over twice as much as Materialism (30.8%), and while that is not a big surprise, my guess is that the leaning towards Spiritualism has increased with my age.  I think that’s probably a pretty natural progression.
  • Altruism (79.5%) vs Egoism (20.5%) – I was almost exactly four times higher on Altruism over Egoism.  I’m sure that has also increased as I’ve gotten older.  “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.”  – Spock
  • Idealism (54.7%) vs Pragmatism (45.3%) resulted in my second closest ratings.  This doesn’t surprise me.  I’m a believer in doing things for the right reason and I am also pretty pragmatic.
  • Hedonism (27.7%) vs Asceticism (72.3%) – This one is perhaps the most surprising.  I see nothing wrong with doing things that are pleasurable, legal and don’t hurt others.  Perhaps the scores are due to the fact that I am a big believer that to just go after instant gratification can lead to problems.  I have put off owning things or spending money now so that I can insure a better future.  The cool thing is since I did that in the past, the future is now.  ; )
  • Nihilism (30.8%) vs Moralism (69.2) – This one would create some interesting debates.  We know that meaning and morality can have different perspectives depending on the culture or situation.  But from my perspective there are certain things that we as a society should all agree on.
  • Rationalism (49.1%) vs Romanticism (50.9%) – These two had the closest scores.  Truthfully, I surprised that Rationalism (intellect and logic) didn’t score higher.  Again, it probably would have with a younger me.  I definitely don’t discount Romanticism (passions and the heart), and they definitely influence decisions and make life better.
  • Skepticism (22.9%) vs Absolutism (77.1%) – were the scores that surprised me most.  I’ve always been pretty skeptical and have wanted to see evidence.  Again, as I’ve gotten older, I think I am more willing to take things at face value.  

I really wish I had taken this test when I was fresh out of college and then again after my sons were out of high school to compare with the scores I have now.  It would be interesting to see which of my perspectives had changed.
