“Swan Song” Starring Mahershala Ali and Glenn Close – The Trailer is Here!

I like the Swan Song trailer and the dilemma it presents.  It will be interesting to see the twists this plot takes.  Mahershala Ali and Glenn Close are a bonus!

Set in the near future, Swan Song is a powerful, emotional journey told through the eyes of Cameron (Mahershala Ali), a loving husband and father diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief. As Cam grapples with whether or not to alter his family’s fate, he learns more about life and love than he ever imagined. Swan Song explores how far we will go, and how much we’re willing to sacrifice, to make a happier life for the people we love.

This Apple Original Film stars two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, Academy Award nominee Naomie Harris and eight-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close. The film also features Golden Globe winner Awkwafina and Golden Globe nominee Adam Beach. Swan Song is written and directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Benjamin Cleary and produced by Adam Shulman, Jacob Perlin, Jonathan King, Rebecca Bourke, Mahershala Ali and Mimi Valdés.

Col Gives Anthony Neil Smith the 3rd Degree! (ANS Gives Up the Goods!)

Yesterday we were talking about Anthony Neil Smith’s new book  The Butcher’s Prayer. Today we have a link to The Col’s Library for a fun and informative interview with ANS.  It’s worth a read even if you’re not already a fan.  Check out QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH ANTHONY NEIL SMITH.  I’ll be here when you get back.  ; )

THE BUTCHER’S PRAYER by Anthony Neil Smith!

Anthony Neil Smith has a new book out!  The Butcher’s Prayer sounds like something that fans of crime noir (Me! Me!) are going to love…

Called to a crime scene when a terrified woman raises the alarm on a horrifying murder, Detective Hosea Elgin finds the victim’s body has been dismembered with professional precision.

Very quickly, two small-time drug dealers are identified as the probable assailants and a manhunt is launched to bring them into custody.

With the two suspects on the run, the consequences of their actions continue to spiral out of control and it becomes clear that while one of them is focused on survival, the other wants only revenge.

As the net begins to tighten on the fugitives, Detective Elgin finds that the case begins to move very close to home and what began as just another murder investigation is developing into something much more personal.

The decisions he makes and the actions he takes may well solve the case and bring the criminals to justice, but in the process he might just tear his family and his church to pieces.

With The Butcher’s Prayer, Anthony Neil Smith shows once again he’s a writer at the very top of his game. This immersive piece of Southern Gothic Noir certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted but with the skill and nuance we’ve come to expect from Smith he dazzles with writing that is precise, measured and never gratuitous.

The Butcher’s Prayer is getting great advance praise and to ANS’ regular readers, that shouldn’t be a surprise…

“The Butcher’s Prayer is wine-dark noir, with a hammering and bloody heart. This is Smith at his bleak and soulful best.” — Laura Benedict, Edgar-nominated author of The Stranger Inside

“Anthony Neil Smith is a massive talent. One of the very best crime writers I’ve ever read.” — Allan Guthrie, author of Kiss Her Goodbye and Hard Man.

“Visceral, propulsive writing that cuts like a razor. Think Elmore Leonard with an injection of Southern Gothic. Heady stuff.” — Dan Fesperman, author of Safe Houses.

“Crime-fiction veteran Anthony Neil Smith wields a smooth yet serrated style that’s carved him two decades worth of fierce material, now being re-discovered by a younger upstart audience of modern noir enthusiasts. He possesses such an acute, vivid feel of time and place in his subjects, his stories immediately burrow into my memory and remain long, withstanding the static storms of our contemporary attention-deficits. It’s challenging stuff, yet wholly accessible; with spiking dark humor that confirms sure you still have a pulse.” — Gabriel Hart, author of Fallout From Our Asphalt Hell

I put my order in today. If  The Butcher’s Prayer sounds like something you’d like, you should too!

The All-Time Best Cowboy Movie Stars!

Liam Gaughan, at /Film, came up with his list of The Twenty Best Western Movie Actors and it is a good one.  As I thought about my choices the top two were easy.  The tough part was deciding which order for the top two and who would get the third spot.  After some deliberation here are my top three…

#3.  Kurt Russell comes in at the third spot based on two strong lead performances in Tombstone and Bone Tomahawk.  It’s a shame Russell hasn’t made more westerns because the genre suits him.

#2.  Clint Eastwood was my choice for the number two spot and I really considered putting him in at #1.  Eastwood’s westerns always score well with fan and critics.  The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Josey Wales and Unforgiven are considered classics.  I wouldn’t argue too hard against Eastwood in the number one spot, but this time out I gave it to…

#1.  John Wayne.  My first place spot goes to the man that most folks think of first when they think of cowboy movie stars.  Wayne’s career spanned 50 years and he made so many popular westerns: Stagecoach, Angel and the Badman, Fort Apache, Red River, Hondo, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, True Grit, The Cowboys and The Shootist are some of my favorites.

The Comic Art of Mike Zeck Gallery Showing!

The Comic Art of Mike Zeck is the subject of a Gallery Showing currently running in the LOIS + DAVID STULBERG GALLERY at Ringling College in Sarasota, Florida.  The Mike Zeck exhibition is scheduled from OCTOBER 18, 2021 – MARCH 25, 2022.

I planned to go down and see the Mike Zeck Gallery the week of Thanksgiving, but (thankfully) checked on the hours of operation only to discover that the gallery will be closed the entire holiday week.  That just means I need to find another time to visit.

I’ve known Mike Zeck for over 40 years.  Mike is as talented as he is nice and that’s saying a lot.  I met Mike through my best bud since junior high, John Beatty.  Beatty started out as a fan of Mike’s art, became his friend and later collaborated with Mike on many high profile projects.  It’ll be cool to see all of the Mike Zeck art on display.  I’m sure it will be strange to see original art that I once held 4o years ago now under the spot light.

If you can make it to Mike Zeck’s Gallery showing, you should.  Either way, here’s a video to give you a taste.

“Blonde. Purple” – The Poster and Trailer are Here!

I like the poster and the trailer for Blonde. Purple.  I’m a sucker for crime movies as long as they look good.  Blonde. Purple makes the cut.

Sly Stallone on the “Rocky” Legacy and His Career!

Sylvester Stallone and John Herzfeld (Actor/Writer/Director and Sly’s long-time friend) take us behind the scenes to share Sly thoughts on the Rocky franchise with a focus on Rocky IV: Rocky vs Drago.

During the Covid-19 shutdown of 2020, Stallone tackled his long-planned cut of the film: the result is ROCKY IV: ROCKY VS. DRAGO, a fine-tuning of the legendary film as well as a fascinating time capsule of a pop-cultural moment.

When it was released in 1985, ROCKY IV became the highest-grossing of all the “ROCKY” films. From writer, director and star Sylvester Stallone, ROCKY IV also features Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Brigitte Nielsen, Dolph Lundgren, Tony Burton, Michael Pataki, Robert Doornick, and Stu Nahan. Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff produced the original film, with James D. Brubaker and Arthur Chobanian serving as executive producers.

“Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road” – The Official Trailer is Here!

I’ve never been a big fan of The Beach Boys.  I like several of their songs, but was more into other bands.  It has always intrigued me how people in the music industry talk about the genius of Brian Wilson.  I like the look of this trailer and look forward to learning more about the man behind the band.

Join The Beach Boy’s Brian Wilson on an intimate journey through his legendary career as he reminisces with Rolling Stone editor and longtime friend, Jason Fine. Featuring a new song written and performed by Wilson and interviews with Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Jonas, Linda Perry, Jim James, Gustavo Dudamel and Al Jardine.

James Gunn Shares “Suicide Squad” Trivia That May Surprise You!

Rob Hunter, at Film School Rejects, posted a fun piece called 43 Things We Learned from ‘The Suicide Squad’ Commentary with James Gunn.

9. (Joel) Kinnaman was challenged as he’s not typically associated with comedies, but he quickly showed a talent and an affinity for earning laughs. (For All Mankind is where I first really noticed what a fine actor Kinnaman is.  I highly recommend the series as well. – Craig)

14. Gunn says John Cena is “probably the most gifted improvisational actor I’ve ever worked with in my life.” (I found this a bit surprising, but was happy to hear it. Cena seems like a nice guy off screen. – Craig)

26. Elba doesn’t actually smoke, and he has asthma, so the scene where Bloodsport smokes in the back of the van left his eyes watering. “I had to take a tear out of his eye with visual effects because I liked the shot.” (Elba doing what it takes for his art!  – Craig)

“Cowboy Bebop” – The Trailer is Here!

I’m surprised at how much I am looking forward to Cowboy Bebop.  This is going to be a fun ride.

COWBOY BEBOP is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka “cowboys,” all trying to outrun the past. As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them.

Based on the beloved anime series, COWBOY BEBOP is executive produced by André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios, Makoto Asanuma, Shin Sasaki and Masayuki Ozaki of Sunrise Inc., Tim Coddington, Tetsu Fujimura, Michael Katleman, Matthew Weinberg, and Christopher Yost. Nemec serves as showrunner. Original anime series director Shinichirō Watanabe is a consultant on the series, and original composer Yoko Kanno returns for the live-action adaptation. The series also stars Alex Hassell and Elena Satine.

Watch Cowboy Bebop, a live-action series, only on Netflix Nov. 19.
