Steranko Sketch
Here’s another item from the ZONE vault. This time we have a rarely seen Steranko sketch of Nick Fury. It appeared as the back cover of a fanzine from around 1978. Steranko was [and remains] one of my favorite comic artists so finding the, until then, unknown fanzine with some of his art made my day.
I can remember my excitement when I found the zine at a little comic book store in Tallahassee… or was it Gainesville? John Beatty and I had driven up with Bill Black or to meet Bill or something… Big John, do you recall the specifics of that trip?
Ah, that’s right. Steve Vance was the guy’s name and he was the editor and art director on the zine.
As to Bea Arthur – earlier today I saw that she died. I kind of thought that YOU would mention her in YOUR blog since you always had such a crush on her from “Maude” and even into her “Golden Girl” years. Condolences, my friend, condolences!
The zine was (is?) VISUAL WONDERS produced in the late 1970’s when we were all living in Tallahassee by Bill Whitcomb and Steve Vance (VW Studios). Steve went on to have a good career in comics, working with Bongo, Marvel and others. Still living in California. Steve plays the “Alien Monster” (the tall one) in my movie THE SANGOR SYNDROME. Coincidentally, I just heard from Bill Whitcomb (after 30 years!) who was enroute to LA to visit Steve. Yeah, Steranko was the best. Real crime that he quit comics in 1972.
Wild Bill! Thanks for checking in with the facts!
