It just came over the wires that Donald Westlake has died at the age of 75 from an apparent heart attack. Mr. Westlake was one the most successful, popular and prolific authors of our time. Not only did he write over 100 novels under various names [ Richard Stark, Tucker Coe, Samuel Holt, Edwin West as well as his own], but he also won three Edgar awards and an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay for “The Grifters.”
My favorite Westlake stories were his crime novels written under his pen-name of Richard Stark. I wasn’t alone in their enjoyment. Not only were they fan favorites, but they were also turned into movies several times with the likes of Lee Marvin, Robert Duvall and Mel Gibson playing the lead. If you like crime stories, then you probably love the Parker novels.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Westlake’s family, friends and fans.

The Overview: Mr. Brooks [Kevin Costner] has just been named Portland’s Man of the Year. He is a rich, successful business man with a beautiful wife and a lovely college aged daughter. Life would be perfect if he wasn’t overcome with urges to kill. You see, Mr. Brooks is a serial killer. After his last double-murder, his first in two years, the demon in him is loose again. But Mr. Brooks’ days may be numbered. He’s being blackmailed by a man [Dane Cook] who accidentally stumbled on to the truth and there’s that determined police detective [Demi Moore] hot on his trail.
The Good: The cast. The story. I especially enjoyed all the subplots. Dane Cook trying to control the situation in which he is out of his league. Demi Moore and the escaped killer after her. Mr. Brooks’ daughter’s terrible secret that was slowly unfolding. The way that Mr. Brooks was torn between his urge to kill and the knowledge that it was terribly, terribly wrong. The plot twists. How everything wraps up. And Mr. Brooks’ relationship with Marshall [William Hurt].
The Bad: What happens to those who fall into the path of Mr. Brooks.
The Ugly: The dreams of a serial killer.
The Summary: “Mr. Brooks” is definitely worth a look — you’ll have a killer good time.
We’ve been talking about Ed Brubaker’s “Angel of Death” for a while. The trailer is now available on line. Before you go check it out, let me say that it has a lot of violence, at least one shocking/gross scene and comes off like a movie that you’d see in a drive-in. If like me, you’re okay with that, then click here.
If you’re a fan of Ed Brubaker and/or Sean Phillips then here’s something worth checking out — CBR.com has an extensive first look at the premiere issue of INCOGNITO. Before you click over, know that this is for mature audiences!
I don’t know anything about the new A&E show Manhunters: Fugitive Task Force other than I really like the poster promoting it. The poster is better than most created for today’s feature films. In fact, if the show is as good as the poster it’ll be worth viewing. I think I’ll tune in and see. [In other words the poster did it’s job.]
O.J. Simpson was sentenced today to at least 15 years in prison.
All I really have to say about that is, what kind of person must you be if you’re convicted of a dozen felonies, including
armed robbery, kidnapping, burglary, conspiracy and assault and those aren’t the worst crimes you’ve ever been charged with?
The series finale to “The Shield” was a fitting ending to one of the best crime/cop shows ever on television. Although it would have been impossible to live up to everyone’s expectations, the series did manage to go out as it came in… with an episode to surpise, shock and keep you thinking long after the end credits rolled.
Next Tuesday, FX will air the final episode of “The Shield.” I’m proud to say that I’ve been a fan of the show since episode one of the first season. I’m equally proud to say that I’ve turned on several friends and family members it as well. If you’re a fan of the show, I’d love to hear how you think it will end. There’s been a lot of speculation among devotees of the show. Some of the more interesting predictions include:So let’s hear your predictions! Then we’ll come back next week and see who came closest to getting it right.

“It’s a bit of a departure. It’s definitely more of a very character based crime movie. I don’t know what’s going on with it right now, but the premise is that this guy was the most [badass] gangster of all time in Las Vegas, and he’s left the life and created this whole new world. His wife died but he’s raising his kid. He’s living in the middle of nowhere and he’s this very religious, trying to live a straight life guy. His daughter is now going to school at UCLA and she disappears, and he goes looking for her. The trail leads to Vegas and he has to go get her, and the entire city kind of comes down on top of him.“
IMPAwrds.com scored a look at two posters for “Killshot” which stars Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke and is based on Elmore Leonard’s best selling novel. The posters are okay — but I’m expecting the movie to be a lot better.
Darwyn Cooke recently talked with CBR.com about his work on the upcoming comic adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker novels. It’s great to hear how closely Stark and Cooke are working and how much Cooke loves the project. You can see and hear the interview here.
Here at the ZONE we love a good zombie tale. We are also partial to excellent crime stories. So… you just know we’re going to have to check out Dead Goombas by J. Torres and Andy B. [even if it is a comedy]. You can get a preview by clicking here.
We first heard about Ed Brubaker’s “Angel of Death” back in July. CBR.com has a set report plus photos [like the one above with Zoe Bell and Ed Brubaker between takes]. You can check it out here.
I know that many ZONErs are Punisher fans. If you fall into that category, then you’ll probably want to check out Newsarama’s exclusive six page preview of Punisher: Frank Castle #66. It’s written by one of my favorite new authors, Duane Swierczynski with art by Michael Lacombe. Fan favorite, Dave Johnson, provides the cover.
