The phone woke him from a dream.

The Overview:  Beware of Spoilers…

Gallatin County Florida Sheriff William Radburn has information that Lisa Otterbein plans to have her husband killed.  A local no-good snitched to Radburn after being approached by Lisa.  She was looking for a killer.  Someone to murder her wealthy husband.

So Sheriff Radburn decides to set up a sting.  If Radburn gets Lisa on tape asking a hitman to murder her husband, she will go to prison and a life will be saved.  Radburn approaches Doak Miller.  Miller is a retired New York City cop with 24 years of service.  Miller recently moved to Gallatin County after his wife divorced him.  Miller is new to the area, experienced and could pass as a killer.

Radburn meets with Miller and lays out the plan.  Miller will wear a wire, act as the hitman, and record Lisa asking him to kill her husband.

Miller meets with Lisa.  She’s beautiful.  More than beautiful really.  Stunning. With amazing deep blue eyes.  Miller is attracted to her.  But he has a job to do.  Miller says all the right things and gets Lisa’s responses on tape.

Radburn is surprised when he listens to the recording.  Lisa doesn’t want a hitman.  She doesn’t want her husband killed.  Sure, their marriage has hit a rough patch, but kill him?  Never.  Miller says his experience dealing with criminals and liars tells him Lisa is telling the truth.  The sheriff was given bad info.

Except he wasn’t.

Miller told Lisa how to respond.  Practiced his questions and her answers until they sounded right.  THEN he recorded the exchanges.

Now Miller and Lisa are heading into a red hot affair and planning a cold-blooded murder.

Lawrence Block wrote this in 2015, but it has the feel of the erotic tales he wrote under pseudonyms at the start of his career.  If you’re a fan of tales like DOUBLE INDEMNITY and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, this one is for you.

The Plot…

1941.  Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt, a professional boxer who retired after blinding another fighter, is transferred to Fort Shafter in Hawaii.  Captain “Dynamite” Holmes is excited to get Prewitt under his command.  Prewitt on his boxing team is a sure thing to win the Regimental Boxing Championship.  When Prewitt refuses to box, Holmes decides to “break him”.

To that end, Captain Holmes orders his subordinates to make Prewitt’s life miserable.  Extra duties.  Extreme punishments.  Nothing can break Prewitt’s resolve.  Company punishments for Prewitt’s “infractions” distance his fellow soldiers from him.  Only Private Angelo Maggio is willing to be friendly with Prewitt.  This causes friction between Maggio and the sadistic Sergeant Judson.

Sergeant Milton knows Captain Holmes is wrong, but it would be career suicide to disobey him.  Of course Milton’s affair with Captain Holmes’ wife would have the same result.

Things are past a breaking point…

… then the morning of December 7th dawns…

From Here to Eternity tied Gone with the Wind with the eight Oscars won by a single film.  This record stood for over a decade. The films were also winners of the Best Picture Oscar.  Interestingly enough only one actor appears in both: George (Superman) Reeves.  Reeves had small roles in both films and is actually uncredited in From Here to Eternity.  

Claude Atkins made his film debut in this film.

The Plot…

High school is almost unbearable for Carrie.  She’s sixteen, immature and an easy target.  At school Carrie is bullied daily.  Her home life isn’t any better.  Carrie is being raised by a single mother who is a religious zealot.

A particularly rough hazing incident in the PE showers leaves Carrie sobbing on the floor. Sue, one of the school’s most popular girls, feels remorse for her involvement. So she asks her boyfriend, Tommy Ross (also one of the cool kids) to take Carrie to the prom.  Sue thinks that if Carrie is seen on a date with Tommy other kids might start viewing Carrie differently.  Tom eventually agrees.

At first Carrie thinks she’s being set up.  Tommy finally convinces Carrie he’s sincere.  Carrie agrees to go despite her mother’s refusal to allow the date.

What Sue, Tommy and Carrie don’t know is that Chris, one of the girls involved in the PE incident, has a plan to humiliate Carrie at the Prom.  Chris has no idea how badly her “prank” can go.  She also has no idea that Carrie has recently discovered telekinetic powers.

Time for the prom.  It will be a night you’ll never forget.

Although the ending of the movie is different than Stephen King’s book, King has said he like the movie’s ending better.

Sue Snell is played by Amy Irving.  Sue’s mother is played by Priscilla Pointer… who is Amy Irving’s real life mother.

John Travolta, who just became a teen idol thanks to his role on Welcome Back Kotter, has a small role but was billed second on posters/ads.

Sissy Spacek was in real life a high school Homecoming Queen.

Carrie features Amy Irving’s feature film debut.

I had read the Stephen King novel a few years prior to seeing the movie.  When the film came out I was a junior in high school.  I saw it with a date at a midnight showing.  I thought the film was ready to roll the end credits.  Then the final scare comes.  It caught me so off guard I jumped out of my seat.  Yeah, try playing that off with your date.  No, I wasn’t scared.  Really.

One of Carrie’s taglines was: Carrie may look perfectly innocent, but she’ll shock you right out of your seat… and that’s a promise!   In my case, promise kept.

Denis knocks once and steps into her room.

Past her bed and to the window, where he thumbs aside the gauzy curtains.  They’re on the fourth floor next to the stairwell.  Naomi rises, sits there numbly, sleep still crowding her.  She’d been dreaming of her brother.

“Come,” Denis says, without turning from the window.  “We have to go.”

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing’s the matter,” he says curtly.  A tall wide-shouldered man wearing a black knit cap and a mishmash of scavenged tactical gear.  A black hunting rifle slung over his shoulder.  A week’s worth of bread.  “Just get dressed.”

Five years ago every cell phone in the world lit up with a call.  Those that answered heard something that changed them into mindless killing machines.  Any person murdered by someone under the influence of the demon message, reanimated with the same sadistic killing urges.

It turns out the message was accidentally sent worldwide tby the President of the United States.  His intention was the call would just go out to phones in enemy nations.  Governments fell.  Terradyne Industries took control in the United States.  The corporation walled in major cities.  They recruited soldiers to control life behind the walls.  Although they claim to be working on a cure — the vaccine they are refining may be for something else.

John Bonner was a US government black ops agent when things went sideways.  His division dealt with the occult.  Bonner was part of the boots on the ground in Portland – a hotspot during the initial days of infection.  Bonner knows the dark secrets behind the apocalyptic call.  He blames himself for not doing more to stop it.

Katherine Moriarty was married to the man who dared dive too deep into the occult.  He became an instrument of doom.  It cost Katherine her marriage, her husband’s life and ultimately killed her son.  Now Katherine wants revenge.

Dean makes do by traveling the wastelands.  Along the way he collects discarded items of worth.  When he can, Dean barters for things he needs survive.

There are whispered rumors that a young girl lives who has the power to cure the infected.  Rationale folks pray the rumors are true.  Those in power at Terradyne Industries know that such a child could bring down their hold on the world.

Now Terradyne has a name: Naomi Laurent. They need to find and bring in Naomi for “study”.

Bonner, Katherine, Dean and others will venture into the apocalyptic wasteland in search of Naomi.  Some want to save her.  Others to do her harm.  The fate of the humanity will be determined by who gets her first… or maybe last.

Rosson has created a worthy follow up to FEVER HOUSE.

When you grow up in a place, especially if your childhood is a good one, you fail to notice a lot of the nasty things that creep beneath the surface and wiggle about like hungry worms in rotten flesh.  But they’re there.

The Overview:  Beware of Spoilers…

Cason Statler, a Gulf War vet and Pulitzer Prize-nominated reporter was on top of the world.  Then he blew it. Cason had an affair with his boss’ wife… and the boss’ thirty-year-old stepdaughter.  That cost Cason his job… and his reputation.

So Cason returned to his small hometown of Camp Rapture, Texas where he was able to get a job as a reporter for the local newspaper.  It’s a big step down for a Pulitzer Prize nominee.  Cason is drinking too much.  He’s fighting jealous feelings towards his older brother who is a happily married college professor.  Plus Cason is spending too much time checking up on his ex-wife.

One day digging through old files, Cason discovers the unsolved murder of Caroline Allison.  Caroline was an intelligent college student who just vanished.  The only clue was her abandoned car.  Cason realizes this could be his ticket back to the big leagues.  He begins a series of articles about Caroline.  As Cason digs deeper he discovers other linked crimes of blackmail, torture and murder.  Worse still Cason’s brother is somehow involved.

Cason has no choice but to keep digging, no matter the cost.

The Plot…

Tova is a widow who is becoming increasingly withdrawn.  Tova never got over the death of her 18 year old son, who died years ago.  Recently Tova’s husband passed.   Her only real joy these days comes from her job as a night janitor at the local aquarium.  She takes pride in her work and enjoys the solitude.  Surprisingly, Tova enjoys talking to the aquarium’s aging octopus, Marcellus.

Marcellus, like all octupi, is extremely intelligent.  Marcellus’ goal is to escape his tank, and return to the ocean before he dies.

Cameron Cassmore, young aspiring musician, is driving through town when his van breaks down.  Needing funds to repair his van, Cameron accepts a job at the aquarium.  It’s a means to an end.

Tova sees Cameron as a slacker.  Cameron views Tova as an old busybody.

Tova, Cameron and Marcellus’ lives will change when a mystery is solved.

REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES was Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel and a runaway bestseller.

Two of Sally Fields’ close relatives also appear in the film.  Sasha Craig (Fields’ daughter-in-law) plays Cameron’s mother in flashback scenes. Noah Craig (Fields’ grandson) plays Marco.

Alfred Molina voices the octopus Marcellus.

Remarkably Bright Creatures surprised me.  It was much better than I anticipated.  A great cast and a wonderfully adapted story make for a fun movie.

“Satan Met a Lady” (1936) starring Bette Davis, William Warren and Marie Wilson / Z-View

Tagline: She recalled how three men met their death…searching for a treasure that had left a trail of blood through twelve centuries!

The Plot…

Detective Ted Shane has just returned to town. Milton Ames, Shane’s former partner reluctantly agrees to work with Shane again.  They parted ways since Shane, a lady’s man, once was romantically involved with Ames’ wife.  Shane has a paying client and money overrides hurt feelings.

A woman named Valerie Purvis wants to hire Shane and Ames to find a man named Farrow.  When both Ames and Farrow are found murdered, Shane realizes there is much more to this case than a missing man.

Shane is soon approached by Madam Barrabas and Kenneth, her slow-witted, trigger happy son.  They want  to hire Shane to find an 8th century jewel-filled ivory horn.  An English gentleman, Anthony Travers, wants to hire Shane to find it as well.  And don’t you know, that’s what Valerie is after too.

Shane, never one to turn down money, decides to play each against the other and accepts payment from all.  Shane’s charm and quick wit have always served him well, but this time he may be in over his head.

Satan Met a Lady is based on Dashiell Hammett’s novel THE MALTESE FALCON.  Screenwriter, Brown Holmes not only changed the title, he changed the names of the characters (including the lead), the sex of the main antagonist and the object everyone wanted.

Bette Davis hated the script and complained to studio head Jack Warner.  She said she would not do the film.  Warner promised Davis better scripts in the future and then suspended her without pay.  Reluctantly Davis agreed to the movie.  Unfortunately she hated the end result and often said it was her worst film.

I recently revisited Satan Met a Lady.  I enjoyed it much more than previous viewings.  I always liked the movie, but this time out liked it even more.  I think in the past I compared this adaption of THE MALTESE FALCON to Huston and Bogart’s take.  Obviously Satan Met a Lady suffered by comparison.  I was also influenced by Bette Davis’ feelings about the film.  This time out, I put past feelings aside and enjoyed a lighthearted 1930s comedy/mystery.

Much of my enjoyment of Satan Met a Lady came from Marie Wilson’s performance as the ditzy, sexy blonde assistant.

In HUNTER’S MOON, Nathaniel Hunter travels to the moors of England.  An army scientist, using protocols that fabricated the prehistoric creature in HUNTER, has infected himself creating a superior beast. This leviathan kills then returns to the savage wilderness of the English moors.  Local police and military units that faced the creature were wiped out.  Hunter barely survived against the original monster.  This new creature is more powerful and resourceful.

In THE LAST HUNT, Nathaniel Hunter is living a peaceful life in his Montana mountainside cabin unaware that he’s been marked for death. Scipio Dante, the genius sociopathic billionaire scientist behind the prehistoric RNA experiments that created modern day monsters, wants Hunter dead.

Dante has perfected the serum that creates the nearly unkillable beasts.  Now those infected become monsters that retain human consciousness.  Dante along with two others will take the serum. As insurance, Dante has hired a team of mercenaries led by Roska.  Roska is a tracker with skills that match Hunter’s.

Nathaniel Hunter has no idea of the storm that is coming to his doorstep.  Three unkillable prehistoric apex predators with human consciousness, and a mercenary squad led by his equal are en route.

Nathaniel Hunter was created with Sylvester Stallone in mind.  As you read the series, it’s easy to imagine a younger Sly as Hunter.  Sly Stallone optioned the rights to adapt Hunter as a film or television series.  Although one has been rumored for years, it has yet to happen.  Fans would love to see it.

The Hunter Trilogy gets my highest recommendation.  They are fast paced.  Well written and fun rides.  Byron Huggins knows his stuff and it shows.

The Plot… (beware of spoilers)

Detective Harry Hole is tormented by the accidental death of his partner, killed in a high speed chase when Hole was driving.  The killer that they were after was never caught.

It’s been five years.  Hole drinks too much and his work and social life is suffering.  Harry’s investigation of a series of brutal ritualistic murders pushes Harry to the limit.  When clues indicate the killer / killers may have ties to the police, Harry doesn’t know who to trust.

Harry’s refusal to stand down puts him and everyone he loves in the killers crosshairs.

Thoughts…

This season adapts THE DEVIL’S STAR, the fifth book in the Harry Hole series.

Tobias Santelmann and Joel Kinnaman are excellent.

Detective Hole starts slow but builds to an exciting climax.  I look forward to future seasons.

The Overview:  Beware of Spoilers…

Monday morning.  Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins is chatting with his buddies when she comes in.  She is Amethystine Stoller, an extremely beautiful, young black woman. Amethystine wants to hire Easy to find her missing ex-husband.  Her ex, Curtis Fields is an accountant.  He’s also white.  An interracial couple, even in 1970, still raises a lot of eyebrows.

Easy feels an immediate attraction to Amethystine.  He also doesn’t trust her.  Two reasons not to take the case.

But he does.

When Easy finds Curtis’ dead body, things get complicated.  Curtis was involved with gangsters, gamblers, blackmail and corrupt politicians. Easy tries to reach his buddy on the LAPD, Detective Melvin Suggs,  but he’s surprised to find Suggs is also missing.  Suggs’ wife has been implicated in a blackmail murder.

As Easy follows the clues, he realizes that the cases may be related and the corruption runs deep.  Easy is going to need backup, so he reaches out to his friend, Fearless Jones.  Together, Easy and Fearless will follow the clues that take them deep into LA’s dangerous underbelly where murders, double-crosses and blackmail are the norm.

This is Walter Mosley’s sixteenth Easy Rawlins novel.  They never disappoint.

The Plot…

A virus has wiped out most of the population. Once infected humans quickly become enraged, unable to think or communicate.  A large group of civilians, soldiers and CDC scientists have found shelter in an underground bunker.

The scientists bring in captured infected for study to find a cure.  They’re surprised to discover that one of their test subjects, a former professor, doesn’t show the normal signs of infection.  Even more shocking is the professor’s ability to understand and communicate  with those infected.   The scientists believe the professor could be the key to a cure.  The professor believes that he (and others like him) are the next step in human evolution.

As the scientists work on a cure, the professor has a plan of his own…

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Fans of Jonathan Maberry’s Joe Ledger tales will be disappointed to learn that this film has nothing to do with the first novel in his series.  Still, fans of zombie movies should enjoy this one.
