A couple of days ago when I was looking for art to accompany my post about Frank Frazetta’s passing, I considered a ton of pieces. The decision was a tough one because Mr. Frazetta had created so many iconic images throughout his career and because so many had made such an impression on me. One that I had considered was the Judge Dredd cover that Frazetta had painted for Mad magazine. I thought that the cover might be an interesting choice since it had a Sly Stallone connection. Ultimately, I decided against it.
Today, as I was reading Mark Evanier’s blog, I came across a piece about Frank Frazetta that included a story about how that Mad cover came to be and why the painting’s background had to be yellow. It’s an interesting post even if you’re not a Stallone or Judge Dredd fan, but even more so if you are. Plus it gave me the opportunity to post the Frazetta/Stallone connection art.

Today Joel Carroll started his new weekly web comic, Topaz. Topaz is…
… a space trucker with a heart of gold, blasting from world to world, hoping to make the galaxy a better place. But trouble seems to follow her…
If this sounds like something you’d like, then check out Topaz by Joel Carroll.

Frank Frazetta died today. He was 82. Although Mr. Frazetta had been in failing health for many years, the news of his passing is shocking. Perhaps it’s because his paintings had such strength, such life. And perhaps because Frank Frazetta’s art has always have been a part of our lives. Mr. Frazetta’s art appeared on the cover of over 150 books and comics, as well as movie posters, album covers, comic book stories, newspaper strips and more. Equally as important are the number of artists and writers who have been influenced by Frank Frazetta’s talent. Thankfully, Frank Frazetta’s art will live on to influence future generations.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Frazetta’s family, friends and fans.

Gerardo Moreno sent in a photo of his latest Stallone piece — Sly from “The Expendables.” Well done, sir!

UFC 113 is over, so that means it is time for the results. Here we go…
Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis vs. Jonathan “The Road Warrior” Goulet
Tom “El Dirte” Lawlor vs. Joe “Filthy” Doerksen
Patrick “The Predator” Cote vs. Alan “The Talent” Belcher
Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione
Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout vs. Jeremy “Lil Heathen” Stephens
Josh “Kos” Koscheck vs. Paul “Semtex” Daley
Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
Final thoughts…
Patrick Cote may be finished in the UFC. I hope that he gets another chance to fight, but with the loss and his year plus layoff due to bad knees, it may be time to call it a career.
Kimbo Slice will probably fight again in the UFC because he is so popular. The question is who would make a good opponent? Perhaps Big Country in a free tv fight?
Stout and Stephens earned Fight of the Night honors for their battle. Don’t you think that coupled with the split decision makes a rematch a no-brainer?
Paul Daley showed a lack of class following and then punching Koscheck way after the final bell rang. He should be fined and suspended. On the other end of the spectrum, Rua showed a ton of class by not punching and stepping back from Machida [even before the ref stopped the fight] because Rua knew Machida was out.
I’m glad I wasn’t betting on the fights tonight…

UFC 113 is tonight on pay-per-view, so that means it is time for my predictions. Here we go…
Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis vs. Jonathan “The Road Warrior” Goulet
Both fighters come in with similar records. Goulet hasn’t fought in a year so that may be enough of an edge for Davis.
Tom “El Dirte” Lawlor vs. Joe “Filthy” Doerksen
I don’t know too much about either of these guys. So I’m going with a scientific choice. Filthy is worse than dirty.
Patrick “The Predator” Cote vs. Alan “The Talent” Belcher
Both fighters come in with 14-5 records. Belcher has been more active and is bigger [6’2″ to 5’11”]. I’m a Cote fan though.
Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione
Odds makers are saying this is a virtual coin toss. Most folks predict that both fighters will stand and thump. Some think that this gives Kimbo the edge, I’m not so sure. Kimbo was KO’d by little known Seth Petruzelli and I think that Mitrione hits harder. If the fight goes to the ground, I think that Mitrione still has the advantage.
Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout vs. Jeremy “Lil Heathen” Stephens
Stout has won Fight of the Night in four of his five UFC bouts. He not only has “Hands of Stone” but a chine of granite. This should be a tough match. Stephens has the slightly better record [17-5 to 16-6] with everything else being equal.
Josh “Kos” Koscheck vs. Paul “Semtex” Daley
Koscheck is the better wrestler. Daley is the better banger. Basically it comes down to who will impose his will and dictate the fight.
Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
The rematch for the title. Both guys are tough and talented. Machida is undefeated and the champ. He won the first time they fought and that should give him a slight edge in this match up.

How often do you get something good for free?
Well, if you’re a regular reader of Francesco Francavilla’s blog, pretty often would be the correct answer. So head on over and enjoy!

I have to admit that this commercial got me. If you’ve got 60 seconds to spare, you can see if it gets you too. [And no, it’s not one of those where a scary face jumps out screaming at ya.]

Dave Wachter and Jim Clark created a web comic, The Guns of Shadow Valley, which was recently nominated for an Eisner award. Although Jim’s name may be new to you, regular ZONE readers should know Dave’s because of my posts about the Stallone pieces he’s drawn for me.
At any rate, here’s an interview from the good folks at Fandomania with both Dave and Jim about their creation The Guns of Shadow Valley…
“Somewhere in the mysterious Shadow Valley lies a secret that could forever change the face of the frontier. To protect that secret, a posse of gunmen with special abilities must come together and defend against a tribe of ghostly warriors, an advancing army led by a deranged Colonel, and the perils of the valley itself.”

I thought this trailer for The American looked interesting. I don’t know anything about it, except for what I’ve seen in the preview. But, at this point, that might be enough to get me to see it.

If you’re not a fan of Jonathan Maberry, it just means you haven’t read his action/horror novel Patient Zero. It’s been described as 24 meets Dawn of the Dead and it actually lives up to that hype on both counts. [Yes, it’s that good.]
Dark Recesses magazine has a very informative interview with Jonathan Maberry right here. My guess is if you’re already a Maberry fan, you’ll really enjoy it. If you’re not a fan, there’s a good chance that once you read the interview, you will be.

Yippee! FX has ordered a second season [13 episodes] of the new fan favorite series Justified. That news has made my day. From The Hollywood Reporter:
“We are very excited about the tremendous, widespread acclaim that Justified has received from both audiences and television critics,” said FX president and GM John Landgraf. “Graham Yost, Tim Olyphant, Elmore Leonard and their talented partners have crafted a uniquely ambitious and entertaining series which is everything we aspired to when we developed the show.”

That’s the partial cover to Bullet in the Head #2 published by Dynamite. I’d actually meant to post about the series sooner, but it’s still not to late to get on board — the first issue won’t be out until June. Bullet in the Head was first published in France back in 2004. It went on to win “Best Story” at the Prix Saint-Michel comics awards. In 2009 the film rights were optioned by Warner Bros.
So, what’s Bullet in the Head about you ask? [And I’m glad you did.] Bullet in the Head is a crime noir about a pair of buddy cops, a pair of buddy hitmen, some femme fatales and a ever-increasing body count. Written by Matz, with art by Colin Wilson, the series is geared toward mature audiences.
You can read more about the series and see the first two covers here.
